How Latest Assassination Attempt Against Trump Shatters Gun Control Narratives

A week ago, I was talking about the latest attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump. This time, the gunman was clear that he wanted to kill as many members of the administration as he could, excluding Kash Patel for some strange reason. He was in the place to commit exactly that attack, and he would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for those meddling Secret Service agents.

But, as per usual, the discussion from Democrats has hinged exclusively on gun control. Not their own rhetoric or anything else, just gun control.

Yet the truth is that this latest attack, especially when considered with the other two assassination attempts, actually shows just how useless gun control is.

Let’s start with the arguments for gun control this time around. I could debunk them, but John Lott, writing at The Federalist, does a fine job of doing so himself.

The attacker had a 12-gauge Mossberg Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun and an Armscor Precision .38 semi-automatic pistol. The guns were obtained from two different gun stores in California. That is an important fact that gun control advocates need to appreciate because gun control groups rate California as the state with the “best” gun control laws.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., appeared on CNN’s State of the Union the morning after the incident and suggested the shooting could become a “moment of unity” to advance “universal, violent criminal background check[s]” for gun ownership. However, California already enforces universal background checks on all gun transfers. The media rarely press gun control advocates on this point, yet my research shows that not a single mass public shooting this century would have been prevented by universal background checks, even if they had been perfectly enforced nationwide.

Malcolm Kenyatta, currently a Democratic National Committee Vice Chair, responded to the event by calling for a ban on “military-grade weapons” and a closing of what he described as “lethal loopholes.” However, the perpetrator did not purchase either gun as a so-called semi-automatic “assault weapon,” much less as a fully automatic military-grade weapon. California, in fact, already enforces an assault weapons ban.

On Monday, Ana Navarro led a discussion on ABC’s The View, where the hosts talked about the incident, expressing hope that Trump and his cabinet had “felt the fear” of being shot and that moment would make them advocate for additional gun control restrictions. Navarro may have forgotten that Trump’s views on gun control haven’t changed despite his previously facing multiple assassination attempts. Other administration officials who attended the dinner also held firm. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated on Sunday that policymakers should not use the attack to justify imposing new restrictions on law-abiding gun owners.

He also calls out Everytown, which claims the problem is “easy access to guns,” by pointing out that they consistently praise California’s gun laws. They really need to make up their mind, don’t they?

The thing is, this isn’t the only example of how the gun control narrative is shattered by these attempts.

Thomas Crooks took a shot at President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. He used an AR-15, the most vilified firearm in the country today. He purchased the gun from his father, reportedly, which is something that’s legal in many universal background check states. However, as he had to undergo a background check for his job at a nursing home, it’s unlikely he would have failed a NICS search. Of course, the fact that he threatened to blow up his school, yet faced no legal repercussions, probably helped with that.

Yet while many focused on the gun, the reality is that any hunting rifle would have served just as well for his purposes, and the fact that he climbed onto a roof under the nose of the Secret Service signals that he wouldn’t have had much difficulty getting a gun on there with him.

The next, Ryan Wesley Routh, set up a nest outside the fence of a golf course where Trump was playing a round. The plan was to shoot him from a distance, much like Crooks attempted. The weapon this time was an SKS, which is a weapon that isn’t typically caught up in most assault weapon bans. Routh, though, a convicted felon, made it kind of obvious that not just that the weapon he obtained would survive such a law, but that laws against armed felons aren’t doing much, either.

Routh never got a shot off, though, because he was spotted before Trump was in view. He got shot at, ran, and got caught, all while being a bizarre figure for us to watch and laugh at for a few months, mostly because he was unsuccessful.

Finally, we’ve got this latest jackwagon. He had a shotgun, a handgun, and got them all in gun-controlled California. He also got closer than Routh did, and he had guns that wouldn’t be restricted in any state. Hell, the gun he carried has a 10-round capacity, enough to be acceptable under almost every gun control measure we’ve seen at the state or federal level.

As we’ve gone on, the weapons used to try to kill Trump have run from the most demonized to the most benign. Hell, even President Joe Biden thought the shotgun was perfect for self-defense, even if his tactical advice was a good way to get thrown in prison.

All around us, the narrative about gun control is shattered by looking at the Trump assassination attempts. From so-called assault weapons to pump-action shotguns, the bad guys will use anything they can get their hands on. Background checks or not, they get guns easily enough. Even the convicted felon got a firearm.

Nothing we’ve been told would stop violence worked in this case, and the anti-gunners keep pretending that they’re on the side of the angels, even though the proof is right before them.

Then again, it’s not really about safety, is it?
