An early-morning dispute between two surfers at a well-known Santa Cruz break escalated into a physical confrontation over the weekend, according to video and statements shared online following the incident, as reported by The New York Post.
The encounter took place Saturday around 7:15 a.m. at Steamer Lane, a popular surf location along the California coast. Footage of the incident, first highlighted by Surfer Magazine, shows a disagreement that began in the water and continued onto land.
Sandro Santiago, a local surfer who later posted the video online, said the situation started as a brief exchange before tensions rose.
Santiago said the other surfer approached him over what he described as a prior disagreement involving surf etiquette, specifically an earlier incident where Santiago had allegedly yelled at the individual for cliff-jumping into the lineup.

According to Santiago’s account, the other surfer continued the confrontation in the water. He said the individual began pursuing him and issued threats during the exchange.
Santiago stated that rather than continuing the altercation in the surf, both agreed to move to shore. Video from the scene shows the confrontation shifting to the staircase leading down to the break, where the two men engaged physically while other surfers remained in the background.
The footage shows Santiago restraining the other individual during the confrontation. Santiago later explained that he relied on his training to manage the situation.
“I didn’t throw a single punch,” Santiago wrote in a post accompanying the video.
This Could Be the Most Important Video Gun Owners Watch All Year
Santiago is identified as a sixth-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. He said his response during the incident was based on principles of discipline and self-defense.
According to his account, he restrained the other individual and asked for an apology. The video shows the altercation ending without further escalation.
The incident has drawn attention due to the location and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. Steamer Lane is known as a prominent surf break, and disputes over positioning in the water, commonly referred to as lineup etiquette, can occasionally lead to disagreements among surfers.
Reports indicate that such confrontations have become less common in recent years, though tensions over access and positioning in crowded surf conditions remain a factor at popular locations.
No information has been released regarding any law enforcement response or whether charges were filed in connection with the incident.
The video continues to circulate online, drawing reactions from viewers as discussions about surf etiquette and safety persist within the surfing community.
