Since early September 2025, the Trump administration has unleashed a relentless military campaign against narco-terrorists operating across the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean.

Under the leadership of President Donald Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth, the U.S. military’s Operation Southern Spear has delivered hard-hitting blows to cartel-linked vessels ferrying deadly narcotics toward America’s shores.

Trump, on his first day back in office, signed an executive order labeling drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. That order gave the War Department the authority to treat cartel operatives as enemy combatants in a “non-international armed conflict.”

It allowed the U.S. to strike them before their poison could reach American cities.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

As of May 6, 2026, a total of 57 precision strikes have been executed, killing at least 180 cartel operatives. The majority of these operations occurred under the coordination of Joint Task Force Southern Spear, directed by U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

Each strike has been publicly announced by American military officials or verified through the administration’s social media updates.

Hegseth has been clear from the start: these are not mere law enforcement stings, but counterterror operations.

As he stated during Operation Southern Spear’s launch on November 13, “This mission defends our Homeland, removes narco-terrorists from our Hemisphere, and secures our Homeland from the drugs that are killing our people.”

That mission statement set the tone for a campaign that has completely rewritten the playbook for combating the cartels.

The strikes have been unflinching and effective. Between February and early May 2026 alone, the military wiped out dozens of suspected drug vessels in international waters.

On May 5, the U.S. struck a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing three. Just a day earlier, two cartel traffickers were taken out in the Caribbean. Each strike announcement was made via U.S. Southern Command’s official X feed, where clear accountability and operational updates are maintained for the public record.

The statistics show a pattern of sustained, coordinated pressure. On April 24 and again on April 26, SOUTHCOM destroyed vessels in the eastern Pacific, killing five total. On April 19, another three traffickers met their end in the Caribbean.

Throughout the spring, the operation’s pace showed no sign of slowing—a sign of America’s renewed willingness to use military power against hybrid threats that compromise our homeland.

Critics have tried to nitpick the campaign’s legal foundation, but the White House has been firm: the cartels are terrorist entities, and the U.S. is at war with them. Trump himself declared that if cartels continue to act as transnational terrorist groups, they will be treated accordingly. That clarity stands in sharp contrast to the indecision and weakness seen in previous administrations.

Lawmakers on the left, of course, were quick to clutch their pearls. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and Connecticut Democrat Jim Himes raised objections about the “legality” of hitting traffickers in international waters. But to most Americans, those arguments ring hollow when fentanyl is killing tens of thousands of citizens each year. Trump’s administration sees this as self-defense—America hitting back against the poisoners.

The operation began in earnest after a late August 2025 deployment of Aegis guided-missile destroyers USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham, and USS Sampson off the coast of Venezuela. Those warships provided the striking power for the new mission, which Trump announced formally in September.

The initial attack took out 11 members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang—just the start of a series of operations that would dominate headlines for months.

By November, the tempo accelerated further under Hegseth’s direct command authority. Dozens of vessels were engaged across two oceans, with many identified as belonging to transnational gangs or designated terrorist fronts.

The message could not have been clearer: the U.S. military, backed by Trump’s order and Hegseth’s no-nonsense leadership, was cleaning house.

Operation Southern Spear also demonstrated the new structure of coordination between the War Department and the U.S. Coast Guard. Survivors of several strikes were rescued and repatriated by the Coast Guard, an example of humane conduct even amid firm counterterror operations.

To date, SOUTHCOM reports more than 180 cartel fatalities, dozens of drug vessels destroyed, and millions in narcotics shipments eradicated. Intelligence officials say the flow of drugs from Venezuela’s coast has dropped sharply since the campaign began. Cartel operators are reportedly fleeing inland or abandoning maritime routes altogether.

This sustained operation has not only crippled narcoterror logistics but has signaled a broader strategic shift: America, under Trump and Hegseth, is no longer content to play defense. By taking the fight to the open sea, the U.S. is rewriting the rules on homeland security and proving that preemptive power projection still works.

For years, the cartels have treated Latin American waters as safe corridors. Now, those waters belong to the U.S. Navy’s watchful eye. The message from Trump and Hegseth remains loud and clear—if you traffic drugs, you are a target. And under Operation Southern Spear, America’s enemies are learning that hard truth one strike at a time.
