As the Minnesota Senate was debating an omnibus gun control bill this week that includes a ban on so-called assault weapons and “large capacity” magazines, Democrat-Farmer-Labor State Sen. Erin Maye Quade launched into a story about how she’s seen firsthand the positive effects of previous gun control efforts in the state.

Minnesota State Sen. Erin Maye Quade (DFL) tells the story about how the gun regulation she helped passed in 2023 helped save a constituent’s life.

“I was in the library in my community and a woman came up to me and she said, ‘You saved my life.’ I’d never met her before. And I said, ‘Great, how?’ And she said, ‘The 24 hour waiting period that you passed in 2023. I was feeling suicidal. I went to go buy a gun, and I had to wait. And I’m alive today because of it.'”

“Gun regulations save lives. Laws save lives. If there is even one child that lives in this state that doesn’t die because of gun violence, it is worth doing this today.”

Now, I don’t like calling people liars, but I guarantee that Minnesota’s 24-hour waiting period didn’t save this anonymous woman’s life. How do I know?

Minnesota does not have a 24-hour waiting period. Absolutely no idea what law Senator Maye Quade is referencing here. https://t.co/JYiHL1CGWF

Now, if a Republican lawmaker had bragged on the House floor about someone coming up and thanking him for a non-existent piece of legislation, I’m pretty sure the Minnesota media would have a field day mocking him. As you might have guessed, though, there’s been no mention of the Democrat’s tall tale in the local press. Even the Heartland Signal, which originally covered her comments, hasn’t updated its post on X to note that the story Maye Quade describes literally couldn’t have happened.

As I wrote yesterday while discussing Brady head Kris Brown’s less-than-accurate take on U.S. postal regulations for mailing firearms, “After more than twenty years of covering the Second Amendment debate in the United States, one of the conclusions that I’ve drawn is that while pro-2A advocates generally want people to be educated about firearms and gun policy, the gun control lobby generally wants folks to be as ignorant as possible.”

Maye Quade’s story is another example of this phenomenon. People who have no idea what Minnesota’s current gun laws look like are far more likely to accept her comments at face value and be moved by them, while those who are generally aware of the laws that are in place were easily able to recognize the problem with the tale she spun on the Senate floor.

The senator should be embarrassed about getting called out by the MN Gun Owners Caucus for boasting about the life-saving impact of a gun control law that doesn’t exist, but the anti-gunners are shameless when it comes to restricting our rights. Maye Quade even professed to know how the two individuals who were killed in the Annunciation shooting would have voted on the omnibus gun bill if they were alive and serving in the legislature, taking victim exploitation to new heights.

The omnibus gun control measure passed the Senate along party lines, though it faces long odds in the evenly-divided House.  In the end, Maye Quade got her wish, though at the expense of her credibility. Why should anyone believe a word she says going forward after hearing her boast about being thanked for passing a non-existent law?

Sadly, thanks to the media blackout on her comments, most Minnesotans will remain blissfully ignorant of her tall tale. I’m still hoping that at least one news outlet will pick up on her unbelievable story thanks to the MN Gun Owners Caucus, but I’m not holding my breath.

Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
