California Governor Gavin Newsom just could not resist letting the cat out of the bag.

Speaking Thursday at a press event to sell his shaky budget plan, Newsom slipped into something else entirely, revealing what he called a “break the glass scenario” meant to ensure Democrats stay afloat in the race to replace him.

In other words, there is a backup plan, and it is all about preventing Republicans from sneaking into November.

According to Politico, Newsom confessed there is a contingency plan designed to stop Democrats from being “locked out of the primary.”

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

California’s top-two primary system sends the two candidates with the highest vote totals, regardless of party, to the general election.

For Democrats, who have controlled nearly every lever of state power for years, the idea of two Republicans advancing is not just unthinkable; it is downright embarrassing.

When asked by a reporter if voters would hold him accountable for withholding endorsements while two Republicans hypothetically advanced, Newsom fired off a smug answer.

“My focus has been making sure that doesn’t happen,” he told reporters, claiming he’d already taken “some action efforts” to ensure that.

The governor bragged that he has been “making my case” and would continue to make sure Democrats keep their hold on the ballot.

He went further, claiming that decisive “action” had already been exercised to shape the outcome.

Then, in what sounded more like a movie script than a serious political statement, Newsom spoke about the so-called “break the glass scenario.”

He said, “There’s many people that have a deep understanding of what it would be like if Democrats were locked out, and we’re going to do everything to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Translation: if democracy fails to deliver the right results, Democrats are ready to stage manage it.

The remarks come on the heels of a new Emerson College Polling survey that is giving Team Newsom heartburn.

Conducted in early May with 1,000 likely primary voters, the poll showed former Biden administration Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra grabbing 19 percent support, edging out others in the increasingly messy field.

Meanwhile, Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat billionaire Tom Steyer each picked up 17 percent, while Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican, scored 11 percent.

Former progressive darling Rep. Katie Porter trailed with 10 percent.

These numbers are a nightmare scenario for Newsom’s allies.

If Democrats start splitting their own vote, the top two finishers could very well include one or even two Republicans, upending the left’s tight grip on the state’s highest office.

No wonder Newsom is talking about breaking glass.

The wall of Democratic dominance could be cracking, and he knows it.

California’s “jungle primary” system has often produced strange outcomes, but few would be stranger than Democrats failing to make the final ballot.

It would be a humiliating rebuke to the party that has ruled Sacramento for decades while driving the state’s economy, energy grid, and quality of life into the ground.

For many Californians tired of watching taxes skyrocket and streets crumble, a Republican on the November ballot sounds like overdue relief.

Newsom, of course, framed his revelation in the language of responsibility. He claimed he wants to ensure “accountability” and maintain “principled neutrality.”

Those words ring hollow when paired with talk of backroom strategies to keep Democrats on top.

When a sitting governor calls on “many people with deep understanding” to coordinate a plan to secure partisan outcomes, that smells a lot more like political insurance than democracy.

The idea that Democrats could be locked out of a California race is both shocking and delightful to conservatives who have been suffocated under one-party rule for years.

It also reveals how brittle the Democrat coalition has become under Biden and Newsom.

When you have to openly discuss emergency plans to keep from losing a race, you are not the confident powerhouse you pretend to be.

Some Democrats fear that California voters may finally be waking up to the results of Newsom’s leadership: rampant homelessness, staggering living costs, dysfunctional schools, and a steady exodus of middle-class families leaving the state altogether.

Those realities make the governor’s soft smile about a “contingency plan” look more like panic in disguise.

If this is what counts as “accountability” in California, voters may decide it is time to break the glass themselves, not to save Democratic candidates, but to rescue their state from the political monopoly running it into the ground.

Newsom can spin his remarks all he wants, but voters heard it loud and clear.

The governor has a plan, and it is not about fairness.

It is about survival for a party terrified of facing the people it claims to represent.
