During a commencement address at Arizona State University, actor Harrison Ford called for sweeping “cultural change” and urged graduates to “extend social justice” across society, as reported by Breitbart.

The Star Wars icon, whose speech touched on issues from climate change to human rights, delivered his remarks in a tone that mixed urgency with warning.

Ford told the graduating class, “We need cultural change. We need to extend social justice. We need to respect and elevate the indigenous peoples that are being marginalized, and in many cases, killed in cold blood.”

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

He did not specify locations or examples where he believed such killings were taking place, leaving the statement open-ended.

At the same time, Ford positioned his message as a call for action. “The world you are stepping into… the world my generation left you… is a real mess,” he said.

He continued by describing what he viewed as an “essential mandate” for humanity. According to Ford, people must “protect 30 percent of the world’s land and sea by 2030” to “prevent the mass extinction” and “slow the warming of our planet.”

The actor emphasized that nature is being lost to “profiteering, corruption, conflict,” and urged those in attendance to use their voices to fight back.

Even while acknowledging environmental crises, Ford also encouraged optimism, telling graduates to “find a place” for themselves and “build something that didn’t exist yesterday.”

He framed the moment as an opportunity for personal empowerment, adding, “Stand up for someone who can’t stand up for themselves. Use your voice to affect change.”

The conclusion of his address carried a celebratory tone despite the serious subjects, as he told them, “This is your time. Own it. Enjoy every second of it.”

Ford’s remarks echoed themes he has spoken about frequently, particularly regarding the environment and social responsibility. However, his critics often point out what they view as contradictions between his advocacy and his lifestyle.

Ford, reportedly worth around $300 million and known for owning several private aircraft, has drawn attention for using private jets even while calling for reduced emissions.

In 2024, he received criticism after reportedly flying privately to attend a personal celebration with his wife, actress Calista Flockhart.

The commencement speech at Arizona State University, therefore, added to the long list of occasions where Ford has merged his environmental activism with his Hollywood platform, prompting both applause and skepticism across audiences.

As with many public figures who address social and environmental priorities, his message invited debate about whether his influence helps inspire change or underscores the contradictions of celebrity advocacy.
