The story of a Virginia teacher shot by a six-year-old student rocked the nation. Nothing at all about that story was good, and it doesn’t really matter who you ask…unless you just talk to psychopaths, I guess.

A young child with a troubled history pulled out a gun and shot his elementary school teacher. That alone was awful, but then we learned that the school had information that the student was armed, that a vice principal failed to act appropriately, and that led to the incident.

Now, the vice principal is on trial for her role in the incident, and she’s throwing everyone else under the bus.

Ebony Parker, the former assistant principal of a Virginia elementary school, took no action after hearing multiple warnings from teachers that a 6-year-old student may have a firearm, prosecutors said in opening statements of her criminal trial Tuesday.

“There was only one person in the school that day that had both the authority to act and the knowledge of the ongoing crisis, and that person you will see was Dr. Parker,” Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Josh Jenkins said.

Parker’s defense flipped the case on its head and accused the teachers – including one who was shot – of being the ones who failed to take proper action.

“If the commonwealth wants to accuse Dr. Parker, what about these other people that had direct contact with this child?” defense attorney Curtis Rogers said.

The defense’s opening salvo was then followed by sharp cross-examinations of two teachers, asking them to explain their actions if they truly believed there was a gun in class. At one point, the judge interrupted a tense back-and-forth to try to “lower the temperature.”

The dueling narratives marked the start of Parker’s trial on eight counts of felony child abuse and disregard for life – one for each bullet in the child’s gun.

Well, that’s a defense, I suppose.

Smells like desperation to me, though.

As I recall, Parker supposedly searched the student’s backpack and claimed there was no firearm there, which would have alleviated teachers’ concerns enough they wouldn’t have taken additional action. If I’m remembering this right, this entire line of defense is a case of trying to cast just enough blame that it creates a reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors, which is all the defense has to do.

Are criminal charges warranted here, though? I honestly don’t know, but I’m not really comfortable with this sort of thing. Parker getting fired? Perfectly warranted and acceptable. She failed to do her job and there were catestrophic results. That’s what happens to most of us if we screw up like that, so why wouldn’t we find that acceptable.

But criminal charges are troubling.

Then again, blaming the teachers for Parker’s own failure is troubling, too.

I honestly don’t know where I come down on this overall, but I do think the idea of blaming the teacher who got shot, in particular, is skeevy as all get out. Victim blaming is supposed to be dead in this country. While we all know it’s not, it’s still vile to blame the victim for why they got themselves shot, especially when the person doing the blaming had a hand in the situation, even if through simple incompetence.
