Three people died, and 18 first responders were hospitalized on Wednesday after authorities responded to a suspected overdose call involving an unknown substance at a residence in Mountainair, New Mexico, according to officials, as reported by the New York Post.

New Mexico State Police said officers arrived at the home around 11:00 a.m. to assist the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the call involved a suspected overdose connected to an unidentified substance.

When officers entered the residence, they found four unidentified people unresponsive inside the home. Three of those individuals later died, according to authorities.

The fourth occupant was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital. Officials said the surviving occupant was being quarantined, evaluated, and monitored at the hospital.

The call also sent 18 first responders to the hospital after they were exposed to the unidentified substance at the property. Police said the emergency workers began experiencing symptoms, including nausea and dizziness, after arriving at the scene.

Authorities said the first responders were also taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where they were being quarantined, evaluated, and monitored. Two first responders were listed in serious condition.

Officials said Albuquerque Fire Rescue HazMat teams were called to the scene to help identify the substance involved.

“Albuquerque Fire Rescue HazMat teams are assisting at the scene in efforts to identify the substance involved. At this time, investigators believe the substance may be transmitted through contact and do not believe it to be airborne,” police said in a statement.

Authorities said a secure perimeter was set up around the residence as investigators continued working at the scene. Officials also stressed that there was no current threat to the public.

Police asked residents to stay away from the area while authorities continued their investigation.

“We ask the public to avoid the area and keep all affected individuals and first responders in their thoughts.”

The incident began as an overdose response and developed into a hazardous exposure call involving multiple emergency agencies.

State police assisted the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office, while HazMat crews worked to determine what substance was present inside the residence.

Authorities did not immediately identify the three people who died or the fourth person who survived. The first responders who were hospitalized were also not identified.

Investigators said the substance remained unidentified as of the latest update. Police said they did not believe it was airborne and said early information indicated possible transmission through contact.

The response remained focused on the Mountainair residence, where the secure perimeter was established as officials worked to determine what exposed the first responders and occupants.
