Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger said Tuesday that she plans to issue an executive order aimed at helping election workers respond if federal agents appear at polling places in the state, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Spanberger, a Democrat, announced the planned order while speaking at a conference hosted by the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank.

The order is expected to address how Virginia election workers and state employees should respond if federal agents show up at polling locations.

According to NBC News, Spanberger said the order would provide details on “how Virginia state employees or people working in support of Virginia’s state-run elections can react to, in this particular case, federal agents who might be appearing at a location where the worry is that they’re principally there to intimidate or scare people.”

The move comes as some election officials and Democratic politicians have voiced concerns about the role of federal agents during the 2026 midterm elections. Elections are administered by state and local officials across the country.

Spanberger said she is concerned that voters could face intimidation at polling places.

“Throughout history, we have seen efforts at intimidating voters. My worry is that we will continue to see those heightened,” Spanberger said. “The reality is that the challenges and the fear that people might have when going to the polling place is real.”

The planned order drew criticism from conservatives who questioned why such a step would be needed if people who are not legally eligible to vote are already barred from voting under existing law.

The announcement also comes amid the Trump administration’s continued focus on immigration enforcement, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.

The Gateway Pundit article that highlighted Spanberger’s remarks questioned the purpose of the order, pointing to Democratic assurances that people in the country illegally are not allowed to vote.

The article asked why Democrats would be concerned about ICE agents appearing at polling places if only eligible voters are casting ballots.

Spanberger’s planned executive order is focused on the response of election workers and state employees if federal agents appear at polling sites. NBC News reported that the order is intended to help guide those working in support of Virginia’s state-run elections.

The governor’s comments were made during the Center for American Progress conference, where she tied the issue to concerns about voter intimidation.

She did not say that federal agents had already appeared at Virginia polling places, according to the information reported.

The issue is likely to draw more attention as the 2026 midterms approach, with election administration, immigration enforcement, and voter access already becoming major points of political debate.
