Authorities in Oregon say an 85-year-old man became an instant hometown hero after stopping a violent criminal who was posing as a utility worker and attempting to kidnap a woman at a Medford mobile home park.

The attacker, 42-year-old Matthew Hokulii Aranda, now faces a laundry list of felony charges after a wild and terrifying assault that left neighbors stunned and grateful for the elderly man’s courage.

Investigators say Aranda, a transient in the area, stalked his intended victim for hours while disguised as a worker. When the 25-year-old caregiver arrived to see her patient, Aranda pounced.

He reportedly used a Taser to shock her before physically attacking her in broad daylight.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Aranda’s plan quickly began to crumble when the elderly resident heard the woman’s screams.

Without hesitation, the 85-year-old intervened to protect her. Authorities called him a “hero” for taking on the armed suspect, giving the terrified victim a chance to flee.

As the confrontation escalated, Aranda allegedly turned his Taser on the elderly Good Samaritan. That cowardly move did not deter the brave neighbor’s intervention.

The victim managed to escape toward her car, although Aranda began chasing her with what investigators described as a large hunting knife.

Once inside her vehicle, the woman tried to drive away, but the suspect reportedly jumped onto the hood. He eventually fell off, injuring himself as deputies sped to the scene. It was there that body camera footage later showed the aftermath of the chaotic attack.

Deputies, supported by a K9 unit, tracked Aranda to a nearby cluster of bushes. Video released by the sheriff’s office showed officers pulling him out and placing him in handcuffs after a short standoff.

Officers said the suspect complained that his “leg is broken” as he was taken into custody.

Authorities announced that Aranda was later indicted by a Jackson County grand jury on ten charges, including two counts of second degree assault, two counts of first degree attempted kidnapping, second degree attempted kidnapping, two counts of stalking, unlawful use of a GPS tracking device, unlawful use of a weapon, and menacing.

Each of those crimes paints a troubling picture of a well-planned but utterly failed attack.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect had allegedly “laid in wait” for his victim, suggesting that the assault was premeditated rather than random.

Law enforcement officials credit the quick response of citizens and deputies alike with preventing a far worse outcome. The heroism of the 85-year-old bystander, they added, saved lives.

This is not an isolated incident in Oregon, which has seen rising concerns about violent crime spilling into residential communities.

Local residents say they are tired of the revolving door of criminals who repeatedly victimize innocent people and get released to offend again. Many are calling for tougher sentencing and stronger support for law enforcement.

The case highlights how communities must remain vigilant, particularly against suspects who disguise themselves as workers to gain trust or access.

It is a deceptive strategy that puts everyone at risk, especially the vulnerable and elderly. Authorities continue to warn residents to verify identification before letting anyone onto their properties.

While big city progressives obsess over defunding police and letting offenders roam free, it was an octogenarian with courage in his heart who actually stopped evil in its tracks.

Ordinary Americans have once again shown that bravery and moral strength can succeed where bureaucracy fails.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and further charges are possible as detectives review electronic evidence. Meanwhile, the 85-year-old whose actions likely saved a young woman’s life is being hailed as a living symbol of community grit and courage.
