Vegas Golden Knights forward Mitch Marner delivered a historic performance during Game 3 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final against the Carolina Hurricanes.

After entering the matchup as the league’s leading scorer of the postseason, Marner extended that lead with a second-period surge that etched his name into Stanley Cup Final history.

In the span of just 6:10, Marner scored three consecutive goals, recording a natural hat trick and setting the record for the fastest hat trick ever in a Stanley Cup Final.

He became only the second player to register a natural hat trick in a single period during the championship round. The outburst arrived as part of Vegas’ 5-4 double-overtime win, which gave the Golden Knights a 2-1 series advantage.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Marner’s first goal came under unusual circumstances when the puck deflected off the stick of Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker and found the net.

The next two goals were scored through clear displays of skill, including one blistering slap shot that beat Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen to the far post.

By the end of the night, Marner had totaled four points in the game — three goals and one assist — and reached 28 points in the postseason, the most of any player.

The Golden Knights’ victory avoided what could have been a devastating setback. After leading 4-0 through two periods, Vegas allowed Carolina to score four times in the third, including three goals in 39 seconds, to tie the game.

Shea Theodore ended the contest with a double-overtime goal that bounced unexpectedly off the boards and Hurricanes goalie Brandon Bussi. The play secured both the win and Theodore’s place as the official Game 3 hero.

Despite Marner’s record-breaking effort, the Hurricanes kept themselves in contention thanks to sharp work from their video coaches, who successfully challenged two Vegas goals in the second period.

Those decisions prevented the deficit from growing to 6-0 and allowed Carolina to fight back later in the game. Still, their comeback fell short as Vegas reclaimed control in the extra session.

Andersen, who had been one of Carolina’s top performers throughout the postseason, struggled in this one, allowing four goals before being replaced after the second period by Bussi.

With the series lead and a record-setting performance behind him, Marner remains at the center of Vegas’ playoff run. The narrative around his postseason play continues to shift after his hat trick under the brightest lights of the Stanley Cup Final.

Should the Golden Knights close out the series and win the Cup, Marner’s performance has placed him squarely among the top Conn Smythe Trophy candidates discussed in connection with the playoffs.

For Vegas, the combination of Marner’s scoring and Theodore’s overtime heroics kept the franchise’s hopes alive, leaving Carolina to regroup ahead of Game 4.

The game added another remarkable chapter to this year’s Final, defined by wild momentum swings, dramatic breaks, and — for Marner — a record that will now stand in Stanley Cup history.
