California voters narrowed down their choices in the overcrowded race to replace former Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned in disgrace after numerous allegations of sexual misconduct imploded his political career.

Democratic candidate Aisha Wahab advanced to the November general election following Tuesday night’s primary, securing 42.4% of the vote, according to the Associated Press as of the time of publication. An additional Democratic candidate will advance to the general election with Wahab once the remaining votes are counted.

Wahab emerged as one of the top contenders of nearly a dozen candidates competing to replace Swalwell in the special election. (RELATED: ‘F**king Tell Everyone’: Billionaire Says He’s Done With Democratic Party, Kicks Swalwell Out Of Mansion)

Swalwell was previously the frontrunner in California’s gubernatorial race before he resigned in April over several allegations of misconduct, ranging from unsolicited sexual advances to rape. Swalwell has denied these accusations.

“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for the mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell said in a post on X. “I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”

After the allegations came out against Swalwell, members of Congress moved to hold a vote to expel the California Democrat alongside Republican Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales. (RELATED: Here’s Where Every California Democrat Stands On The Explosive Eric Swalwell Rape Allegations)

Notably, Gonzales was facing scrutiny and pressure to resign after a former district staffer committed suicide by setting herself on fire. Messages between Gonzales and the late staffer, Regina Santos-Aviles, revealed the two were having an affair, with Gonzales sending multiple texts that were sexually explicit.

Gonzales and Swalwell evaded expulsion votes, and both resigned on April 14.
