Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy said he is considering a run for mayor of New York City, citing concerns about the growing influence of Democratic Socialists of America and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Portnoy discussed the possibility during an appearance on Jesse Watters Primetime on Fox News, where he said recent political developments in New York have prompted him to think about entering public office.

His comments come as Mamdani and other Democratic Socialist-backed candidates have received increased national attention following a series of primary victories in New York and elsewhere.

Portnoy, who built Barstool Sports into a national media company, has become increasingly vocal about political issues in recent months, particularly those involving New York City.

According to Yahoo News, Portnoy has criticized Mamdani for “hogging the spotlight” after the New York Knicks won the franchise’s first NBA championship in 53 years.

The report also noted that Portnoy has publicly criticized some of Mamdani’s political endorsements.

During his interview with Fox News, Portnoy said the political climate in New York has led him to consider mounting a campaign.

“I’m losing my mind on what’s happening right now, especially in New York,” Portnoy said.

When asked about the possibility of challenging Mamdani, Portnoy acknowledged that he does not know whether he could win.

“Can I win here? I have no idea,” he said of running against Mamdani. “I don’t know the demographics, whether they get enough votes.”

Despite that uncertainty, Portnoy said he believes he has built significant support in New York City through his work over the years.

“There’s a lot of people who like me in New York City. I know that I’ve done a lot of good in New York City when I wasn’t thinking about politics, whether it’s the Barstool Fund, pizza places.”

Portnoy also contrasted his professional background with that of many elected officials.

“So it wasn’t for show. I’ve had a real job. I’ve done real things, unlike these clown politicians who have never had a job and never been in the real world for a day.”

The Barstool Sports founder did not announce an official campaign or provide a timetable for making a decision. Instead, he presented the possibility as something he is actively considering while evaluating the political landscape in New York City.

Portnoy has become one of the country’s most recognizable media personalities since launching Barstool Sports.

In addition to sports coverage, he has drawn attention for charitable efforts through the Barstool Fund and for his popular pizza review videos, which have featured hundreds of restaurants across the country, including many in New York City.

His remarks come as discussions surrounding the Democratic Socialists of America and the direction of New York politics continue following recent primary elections.

Several victories by DSA-backed candidates have sparked debate over the ideological direction of Democratic politics in the city.

While Portnoy has not formally entered the race, his comments on Fox News placed him among the public figures who have expressed interest in challenging the city’s current political leadership.

Whether he ultimately files to run remains to be seen, but his remarks underscore the heightened attention surrounding New York City’s political landscape following this year’s primary elections.
