Wil Wheaton ignited controversy after publicly criticizing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for choosing to stay quiet about his political beliefs, as reported by Page Six.
The “Stand By Me” actor, known for being outspoken about his political stances, took to Threads to call Johnson a “coward” following comments the wrestler-turned-actor made in an interview with Esquire.
“So disappointing to find out he is such a coward,” Wheaton wrote Monday in response to a post from George Takei highlighting Johnson’s remarks.

Johnson, 53, told Esquire that he intends to keep his political opinions private because he doesn’t want them to overshadow his creative work.

“What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep — need, not want — the main thing the main thing,” Johnson explained.
He elaborated that creating stories and art remains his primary focus, saying it’s what motivates him every morning.
“I’ve learned I’m going to keep my politics to myself,” Johnson continued. He added that while open discussion is still possible, he no longer sees value in fueling public political debates.
“If I’m wrong, I’ll tell you I’m wrong. Or if I feel like I got a leg up and this is the right way to go, I’ll share it with you,” he said.

Johnson, who identifies as an Independent, also stated that he believes people with differing political views should engage in conversation instead of using public platforms to attack one another.
“I hate the slinging. I hate all the bulls— that comes with it,” he remarked.
Wheaton’s criticism stood in contrast to Johnson’s call for civility. The actor has consistently voiced strong political opinions and supported Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election.
Johnson previously endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 but said ahead of the 2024 race that he would not endorse another candidate. He expressed regret for his earlier endorsement, explaining that it had deepened political divisions.
Despite stepping back from political commentary, Johnson has commented on significant national moments. He condemned the July 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, calling political violence unacceptable.
“Whether you love Donald, don’t love Donald, it doesn’t matter. They tried to assassinate him. There’s no room for that,” Johnson said at The Value Conference in September 2024.
He added that regardless of divisions, he still believes the country’s true character is defined by unity and humanity. “So him standing up at that moment, we wanted to see that,” Johnson reflected.
During the same period, Trump acknowledged Johnson’s outreach after the attack, saying the actor asked UFC president Dana White for his contact information.
“When I was shot, you may have heard about it.” The Rock called Dana White and said, ‘I want to have his number. I want to have his number. What he did is sort of incredible,’” Trump said during an October 2024 appearance on “Six Feet Under with Mark Calaway.”
“He considered it bravery. I don’t know, to me, I considered it, ‘What’s going on here?’ But it was very nice, The Rock,” Trump added.
The escalating exchange between Wheaton and Johnson underscores a growing divide in Hollywood regarding how public figures should approach political expression.
Wheaton’s frustration focused on what he saw as a retreat from using fame as a tool for advocacy, while Johnson emphasized personal conviction and creative focus.
Neither has responded further since Wheaton’s post, but the friction highlights how even calls for neutrality can spark heated reactions in the realm of celebrity politics.
