New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is urging residents and businesses to conserve energy as dangerous temperatures grip the Northeast and Midwest ahead of the Independence Day holiday weekend, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

On Wednesday, Mamdani asked New Yorkers to prepare for the extreme heat by creating a personal heat safety plan while also encouraging businesses to raise their thermostats to reduce strain on the city’s electrical grid.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the triple digits across parts of the Midwest and East Coast this week, with heat index values in some locations expected to reach as high as 112 degrees.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“I am asking every New Yorker to make a heat plan before the worst of this weather arrives,” Mamdani said Wednesday.

“The best protection against extreme heat is air conditioning. If you don’t have it at home, know now where you’ll go to stay cool. Check in on your neighbors, especially seniors, and if you see someone outside who appears to be in distress, call 311 so we can get help to them. This administration is using every tool we have to keep New Yorkers safe, but the strongest city is one where neighbors look out for one another.”

The mayor also called on business owners to help reduce electricity demand during the period of extreme heat.

“And to every business owner, please set your thermostats to 78 degrees to alleviate the stress on our grid,” Mamdani told New Yorkers.

The remarks came as the city expanded its response to what officials described as a historic heat wave expected to continue through the July 4 holiday weekend.

According to City Hall, Mamdani released a public service announcement encouraging residents to make a heat plan, check on family members and neighbors, and use the cooling resources available throughout all five boroughs.

City officials said the mayor convened agency leaders earlier this week to coordinate additional emergency measures designed to protect residents during the prolonged period of dangerous temperatures.

The latest actions build upon the city’s Heat Emergency Plan announced earlier in the week.

Among the expanded measures, New York City is extending operating hours at Olympic-sized and intermediate-sized outdoor pools until 8:30 p.m., allowing residents additional evening access to relief from the heat.

The city is also opening eight additional municipal buildings as cooling centers from noon until midnight between July 3 and July 5. Another 10 public library branches will serve as cooling centers throughout the holiday weekend.

Officials also announced an expansion of outreach efforts for vulnerable residents. The city is adding 150 volunteers, increasing its total street outreach workforce to more than 600 people.

In addition to asking businesses to set thermostats at 78 degrees, city officials are encouraging all New Yorkers to conserve electricity during periods of peak energy demand to help reduce stress on the power grid.

NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Christina Farrell emphasized that residents themselves can play a major role in protecting one another during the dangerous weather.

“We have deployed every resource this city has, but our most powerful tool isn’t a forecast or a cooling center. It’s a New Yorker,” Farrell said.

“The neighbor who knocks on the door, the family member who calls to check in, the stranger who stops to help. This holiday week, we are asking every New Yorker to look out for one another so that no one faces this heat alone. Visit nyc.gov/beattheheat or call 311 to find a cooling center near you and get the resources you need to beat the heat.”

The city continues to encourage residents to monitor weather conditions, locate nearby cooling centers if needed, check on elderly neighbors and relatives, and seek air-conditioned spaces during the hottest portions of the day as the heat wave continues through the Independence Day weekend.
