California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s claim that President Donald Trump’s Justice Department launched a politically motivated investigation against him is facing new questions after multiple news organizations reported that at least some of the federal inquiries began before Trump returned to the White House, as reported by Fox News.

The dispute centers on the timeline of several reported investigations involving individuals within Newsom’s political orbit.

While Newsom has argued that the Justice Department under Trump is conducting a politically motivated “fishing expedition,” multiple outlets have reported that at least one of the investigations originated during the Biden administration.

According to CalMatters, two criminal investigations connected to Newsom’s orbit have been underway for about a year in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.

The outlet, citing a Justice Department source familiar with the matter, reported that the investigations stemmed from whistleblower allegations and local complaints originating in the Sacramento area.

CalMatters also reported that one investigation involving former Newsom chief of staff Dana Williamson was opened during the Biden administration.

Additional reporting from CBS News, Axios, the Financial Times, and The Guardian, each citing sources familiar with the investigations, likewise indicated that at least one federal inquiry began roughly a year ago and originated within California rather than at Justice Department headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The reported timeline has become a central point of disagreement between Newsom and the Justice Department.

Although the reported investigations predate Trump’s second administration, Newsom has maintained that the current Justice Department expanded or politicized the inquiries because of his criticism of Trump and his national political profile.

The governor has described the reported investigation as a politically motivated “fishing expedition.”

Newsom’s administration has also sought records through the Freedom of Information Act in an effort to determine who authorized or directed the current investigative activity.

The reporting follows earlier developments involving Dana Williamson, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to corruption charges in a separate case. According to reports, that case did not implicate Newsom.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche addressed the governor’s allegations this week while declining to discuss any ongoing investigations.

Responding to Newsom’s claims, Blanche told reporters he was “not sure [Newsom’s] words are in any way grounded in fact,” adding that the California governor “would have to address that.”

Blanche neither confirmed nor denied whether any investigation involving Newsom exists.

Newsom’s office responded on social media by posting a meme with the caption, “Why you always lyin,” while the governor’s press office also defended its position.

“Trump goons know that it’s not a crime to lie to a reporter,” the governor’s office said.

According to CalMatters, Newsom’s office contends federal prosecutors broadened their inquiries after they were unable to build a case stemming from the Williamson investigation.

The expanded scrutiny reportedly includes Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, along with the couple’s finances and associates.

CalMatters reported that investigators have reviewed the first partner’s tax filings, nonprofit organizations, and certain behested payments. The report did not allege that the payments themselves were unlawful.

Fox News Digital previously reported, citing federal sources, that investigators have opened inquiries involving Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

However, Fox News Digital also reported that it had not learned of any federal investigation directly targeting Gov. Newsom himself.

As of publication, neither the Department of Justice, the White House, nor Newsom’s office had responded to Fox News Digital’s requests for additional comment regarding the reported investigations.

The differing accounts over when the investigations began have become a focal point in the ongoing dispute.

While Newsom continues to argue that the current Justice Department has weaponized the inquiries for political reasons, multiple news organizations have reported that at least one investigation began during the previous administration and originated with federal prosecutors in California.

Questions surrounding the scope and status of the reported investigations remain unresolved, and federal officials have not publicly confirmed the existence of any ongoing investigation involving the governor.
