Angel Studios is forging ahead with a sequel to its historical drama Young Washington after the film achieved a strong opening weekend at the box office, as reported by The Post Millennial.

According to Deadline, director, producer, and co-writer Jon Erwin confirmed that the follow-up, titled 1776, is now officially in development.

The announcement arrived only days after Young Washington made its theatrical debut over the Fourth of July weekend, underscoring the movie’s quick impact with audiences.

Erwin delivered the update in a video message filmed at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, making the news particularly fitting for fans of the historical hero.

He said one of the most frequent questions he has received since the film’s release is whether Washington’s story would continue beyond the first installment.

“The answer is yes,” Erwin stated. “We are working on another one right now. We have just begun writing another Revolutionary War epic in the year 1776.”

The filmmaker promised audiences an even larger production than the original, suggesting that this new chapter will raise the stakes both in scope and narrative ambition.

“If you think Washington’s big, wait for 1776. It’s epic in every way. Another incredible chapter in this man’s life and legacy,” Erwin said.

While few details about the sequel have been made public, the title alone points directly to one of the most pivotal years in the American Revolution.

Young Washington centers on George Washington’s experiences during the French and Indian War, before he became commander of the Continental Army and ultimately the nation’s first president.

William Franklyn-Miller stars in the leading role as Washington, joined by an ensemble cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis, Kelsey Grammer, and Mary-Louise Parker.

Angel Studios has not yet provided a release date for 1776, though Erwin confirmed that writing on the screenplay is already underway as the studio works to expand Washington’s story.

Following the success of Young Washington and the enthusiastic reception from audiences, Angel Studios appears eager to build momentum with another large-scale historical epic.

Before he led a nation, George Washington was a soldier.

The creative team is positioning 1776 as both a continuation and a cinematic celebration of one of the most transformative years in American history, promising more grandeur, spectacle, and exploration of Washington’s legacy.
