President Donald J. Trump announced Wednesday that his administration will launch a new initiative aimed at replacing illegal alien truck drivers with American military veterans, citing recent fatal crashes involving foreign nationals unlawfully present in the United States.

The announcement came during a roundtable discussion in Pennsylvania, where Trump outlined the proposal and said veterans with experience operating military vehicles would receive streamlined access to commercial driver’s licenses.

“Today, I am making one more important announcement,” Trump said during the event.

“My administration will soon take historic action to get illegal alien truck drivers…driving all over the American roadways…and we’re going to replace them with proud American veterans.”

According to the president, the initiative will automatically make veterans who previously drove U.S. military trucks eligible to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL).

Trump said the policy is intended to expand employment opportunities for veterans while removing illegal alien truck drivers from the nation’s highways.

During his remarks, Trump also expressed concerns about truck drivers who are in the country unlawfully, stating that they abuse drugs and alcohol, lack sufficient English language proficiency to read highway signs, and are responsible for fatal crashes.

The announcement follows several high-profile crashes involving commercial truck drivers who were identified as foreign nationals unlawfully present in the United States.

One of the most recent incidents occurred on July 1, when Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Michael E. Pahira Jr., 44, was struck and killed by a semi-truck in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

Authorities later identified the truck driver as Michael Bon, an illegal alien from Haiti.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Bon had been issued a commercial driver’s license by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The Department of Homeland Security also said Bon had been released into the United States by the Biden administration in 2024.

DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated that Bon applied for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in October 2024, but the application was never approved.

Trooper Pahira’s death has become one of several recent cases cited by federal officials while discussing commercial trucking safety and licensing practices involving foreign nationals.

Federal officials have also pointed to concerns over how some states issue commercial driver’s licenses to individuals who are unlawfully present in the country.

Last year, the Trump administration’s Department of Transportation began a nationwide crackdown targeting states that issue commercial driver’s licenses to foreign nationals unlawfully present in the United States.

The enforcement effort is intended to examine state licensing practices and ensure compliance with federal requirements governing commercial driver eligibility.

Trump’s newly announced proposal would also expand employment opportunities for former members of the U.S. Armed Forces by recognizing military driving experience as sufficient qualification for a commercial driver’s license.

Military personnel often receive extensive training operating large tactical vehicles, transport trucks and heavy equipment during their service.

Under the administration’s proposal, veterans with that experience would no longer have to complete additional requirements before becoming eligible for a CDL.

The president presented the initiative as both a public safety measure and a workforce development effort designed to place qualified veterans behind the wheel of commercial vehicles while removing illegal alien drivers from the nation’s highways.

The announcement adds to the administration’s broader immigration enforcement agenda, which has included increased scrutiny of commercial driver’s licenses issued to foreign nationals and additional coordination between the Department of Transportation and the Department of Homeland Security.
