I’ll be honest. I didn’t realize that Nancy Sinatra was still with us, but at the ripe old age of 86 the songstress is alive and well and sharing hot takes on social media.
Sinatra received a lot of responses after expressing her desire to “eliminate all guns” in a post responding to another pro-gun control X user.
Eliminate the guns. The founding fathers did not know about automatic weapons. https://t.co/37E5dQp1jm
— Nancy Sinatra (@NancySinatra) July 27, 2026
No, the Founding Fathers didn’t know about automatic weapons. They also didn’t know about the Internet, social media, or smartphones. Does that mean that communication on those devices doesn’t implicate the First Amendment? Of course not, and it’s just as silly to suggest that the Second Amendment no longer applies because we’ve moved past the musket as our most popular firearm.
The post that Sinatra was responding to is equally off-base. The shooting in Seattle didn’t involve so-called assault weapons. According to police, it was most likely a gang-related shooting involving at least three individuals using illegally obtained handguns, and at least two of the suspects aren’t old enough to legally possess a firearm in the state of Washington. An “assault weapons” ban would have been just as successful in preventing this shooting as the state’s waiting period law, universal background checks, and ban on “high capacity” magazines: not at all.
Sinatra received an education in the history of firearms, as well as a heaping dose of criticism that isn’t family friendly enough to post here.
The Puckle Gun would like to have a word. pic.twitter.com/hLhvvC9IJv

Technically, the Puckle gun wasn’t an automatic weapon. It was essentially the precursor to the Gatling gun and relied on the user cranking a cylinder to the next chamber, which closed the firing pan of the previous chamber but still required the user to prime the next chamber. In a test conducted in 1722, the Puckle gun was able to fire 63 rounds in seven minutes; remarkably fast for the day, but not exactly on par with a modern semi-automatic rifle.
The Puckle gun was never widely adopted either, unlike semi-automatic rifles. Even though it bears little resemblance to an AR-15, M1 Garand, or even a Winchester 1873, its existence is evidence of the fact that gun makers were constantly looking to innovate and improve the accuracy, dependability, and rate of fire long before Samuel Colt came onto the scene.
1) The Founding Fathers realized technology was ever-changing. They could have said “everyone has a right to own a musket” but they didn’t. They made sure the law was timeless.
2) You could (and can still) own a cannon that fires grapeshot. It’s a military weapon. The Founders…

That’s a much better argument, in my opinion. While a cannon might not be considered an “arm” by the Supreme Court’s standards since it’s not “bearable” by a single individual, it’s absolutely the case that the Founders wanted the citizenry to possess the same arms that a standing army might have at its disposal. Cannons weren’t commonly owned back in 1791 anymore than they are today, but it is true that there was no federal prohibition on their ownership all the same.
Sinatra isn’t the only X user to get a significant response to a post dealing with the Second Amendment in recent days. Second Amendment Foundation Director of Legal Research and Education Kostas Moros also generated a lot of commentary with this post.
New rule: if you say “all gun laws are unconstitutional,” I’m going to immediately ask you why you believe that child rapists who completed their prison sentence should be able to buy a gun right after release.
You might respond: “Well child rapists should never get out of…
— Kostas Moros (@MorosKostas) July 28, 2026
“All gun laws are unconstitutional” is a popular position online, but it won’t get you very far in a court of law, legislative body, or even the court of public opinion. Moros argues that most gun laws are unconstitutional, but brought up gun bans in schools and prohibitions on violent felons possessing firearms as examples of laws that he thinks would comply with the text of the Second Amendment.
There’s also plenty more examples you can think of. If you are drunk out of your mind, would it violate the Second Amendment if police temporarily disarm you? If a Court prohibits you from carrying guns into the building, are the marshalls at the metal detector violating your Second Amendment rights? Is banning guns from illegal immigrants against the Second Amendment? And so on, and so forth.
Laws that don’t implicate “the people,” like banning illegal aliens or minors from lawfully possessing firearms, would likely withstand a Second Amendment challenge, even under the most originalist interpretation of the Constitution. The Fifth Circuit, which is probably the most conservative appellate court when it comes to our right to keep and bear arms, has also held that laws prohibiting possession of firearms while actively intoxicated are likely a part of our national tradition of gun ownership (though laws banning gun possession by those who use intoxicating substances are not).
Social media and nuance go together like peanut butter and sardines, so I’m not surprised that Moros received considerable pushback to his position. Of course, Sinatra’s absolutist take wasn’t well-received either, because her demand clearly would violate the Second Amendment. In fact, it would gut the Constitution of one of our most fundamental civil rights.
Sinatra won’t ever get her way. Neither will those who believe the Second Amendment protects the right to own a nuke. I do believe, though, that in my lifetime we can reach a point where U.S. citizens in all 50 states will be able to exercise their right to keep and bear arms without having to wait for months on end to obtain government-issued permission slips or pay exorbitant taxes and fees.
Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
