You kinda sorta knew there would be ripple effects from the invasion of what has now been reported to be 72,000 North Africans into the tiny Spanish exclave of Ceuta last week. Not only were Europeans living in countries with their own out-of-control immigration issues watching in horrified fascination what was happening on the African coast, but they were also frightened at the thought of how much of that human flood would be headed their way. Any portion of it would be adding to the already intolerable situation experienced by many members of the European Union, thanks to the rampant and unfettered immigration of the past, exacerbated by the illogical and insane restrictions on deportations and repatriation of the present.
In mid-July, before the Ceuta situation exploded, the coalition government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz was already limping along from one crisis to the next. Anticipating what are shaping up to be blowout local elections thanks to his nearly historic unpopularity and clinging to his job by his fingernails, Merz had reshuffled his cabinet in an attempt to mollify members of his equally concerned party and convince a restless and increasingly angry German public that he was ‘doing something.’
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz named Health Minister Nina Warken as his new chief of staff on Friday, as part of a reshuffle intended to inject momentum into his unpopular government before difficult state elections in September.
Merz also said more changes were to come. Two sources familiar with the matter said he was set to replace his transport minister, but that will take longer as Merz’s pick pulled out after initially agreeing to take the role.
Warken will be the first woman to hold her new post, an important position that serves as a node between the chancellery, ministries and lawmakers at a time when Merz is pushing reforms to revive Europe’s largest economy.The reset follows the abrupt resignation of conservative party heavyweight Jens Spahn as parliamentary faction chief, in a row over his decision to have a surrogate baby despite his party’s staunch opposition to surrogacy.Merz is under pressure to deliver after a testing first year in office. He trails in opinion polls to the far-right Alternative for Germany and faces the prospect of the AfD gaining power for the first time at state level in September.
That last sentence describes the impetus driving everything. Alice Weidel’s Alternativ für Germany (AfD) Party had been racking up steady gains in other regions, even in places the AfD had never placed before. And the polls were looking dire for Merz’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and his partners.
For the first time ever, by the beginning of August, AfD was polling free and clear of a statistical tie with Merz’s CDU, charging out to an eight-and-a-half-point lead at 28%.
That was alarming enough in itself, but then word of the unthinkable happened. Ahead of the local September elections, AfD was outpolling the CDU in Berlin itself.

Berlin’s sudden swing might very well be immigration related, too. Something that the mainstream parties have repeatedly ignored the German voting public’s expressed wishes for change on.

An Ifop poll for Têtu found 27% of LGBT voters would support National Rally (RN) in the first round of the 2027 presidential election, up 10 percentage points from three years earlier.
United Kingdom: Polling shows Reform UK is the leading choice among gay voters with 25% support, ahead of the Green Party (19%), Labour (18%), and the Conservatives (15%).
In Spain, Vox leader Santiago Abascal has argued that more gay voters are now backing his party because of its hard-line stance on immigration.
If AfD is chipping away at the mainstream and Left’s best base, Katy bar the door.
Time to do what German government and party officials do best.
There had been a petition circulating from the Republican Lawyers Association (RAV) at the same time that Merz was doing his cabinet musical-chair number. What it proposed to do was ban the AfD Party, and, by the middle of July, it had gathered some 500 or so signatories who were members of the German legal profession – judges, clerks, lawyers, and such.
DEFENDERS OF DEMOCRACY

A group of German lawyers, judges, and prosecutors have signed a petition calling for the launch of constitutional proceedings to ban Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). The initiative was organised by the Republican Lawyers’ Association (RAV), which has repeatedly urged the federal government and parliament to submit a formal application to the Federal Constitutional Court.
The RAV said support for the appeal had risen from around 500 legal professionals in mid-July to 1,051 signatories. The association argued that defending human dignity includes opposing political parties that, in its view, conflict with the fundamental principles of Germany’s constitution. It cited Article 21 of the Basic Law, which allows political parties to be declared unconstitutional if they seek to undermine or abolish the country’s free democratic order.
No one’s falling for the democracy-in-the-tailpipe trick.
The mainline parties were economically incentivized to not control immigration and enact policies that damage Germany’s economic base, which is why they are further economically incentivized to outright eliminate the AfD.
They will do the same for every nation.

The catch is that the spazzers have all the cards, because only the Bundestag can ask the courts to ban a political party – the voting public has no say in any of it. This petition is meant to put pressure on elected officials in the German parliament.
As AfD grows in strength to become a party that, if polls hold true, would win enough seats not to require the formation of a coalition government, then all the machinations of the cordon sanitaire the mainstream parties have used over the past four years to keep the AfD completely frozen out of government no matter how many seats they’d won are for naught.
It would be over, with a capital ‘O’, and Weidel’s Party would run Germany alone.
This is what national polls at the moment are indicating, as AfD creeps ever closer to that magic 33 percent threshold.
The only people who can ban a party that threatens the people in power are the people already in power.

…and after watching Ceuta be overrun, those numbers are sure to move even higher for Weidel’s party.
Those critical elections are next month, and I believe we can anticipate a Defend-Democracy-a-Palooza if Merz and company sink any further.
