Zohran Mamdani’s Smiling Online Persona Masks Thin Skin and Private Fury, Insiders Say

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has built a polished online brand around smiles, confidence and carefully produced videos. But more than a dozen elected officials, consultants and political insiders told The Post that behind City Hall doors, the mayor is highly sensitive to criticism and quick to confront those who challenge him publicly.

The accounts describe a politician who watches press coverage closely, nurses grudges and becomes especially responsive when negative headlines threaten his image.

Several sources requested anonymity because they still must work with the administration on matters of policy and politics.

“I see more and more he cannot handle criticism, but mainly from elected officials who he thinks he can push around,” one political consultant said.

Insiders said the mayor often contacts officials after they criticize him publicly, especially when their remarks could fuel damaging coverage.

That reported sensitivity surfaced after Jewish leaders urged Mamdani to “stop fanning the flames of hatred” against Israel following an alleged antisemitic stabbing on the Upper West Side.

Sources said he called at least one official who attended the news conference and objected to the criticism being connected to his own rhetoric.

Days before the attack, Mamdani published a sober, two-minute video branding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal.”

The video collected a staggering 100 million views, illustrating how social media has become the central machinery behind Mamdani’s political identity.

Mamdani now has 3.5 million followers on TikTok and 11.9 million on Instagram.

His slick online operation helped propel him during 2025 from a little-known state lawmaker into City Hall and made him a national standard bearer for the Democratic Socialists of America.

His campaign flooded New Yorkers’ feeds with carefully packaged affordability messages and stunts about issues such as “halalflation” at street food carts.

It was socialism wrapped in cheerful video production, and plenty of voters apparently bought the packaging.

After taking office in January, Mamdani poured $53 million into a new Office of Mass Engagement, expanding an already enormous communications operation.

Critics have described the office as a propaganda arm for City Hall, which is hardly an unreasonable concern when taxpayers are financing the mayor’s image machine.

Mamdani has kept the videos coming, including a clip outside billionaire Ken Griffin’s $200 million condominium promoting the DSA tax agenda.

He also released a 13-minute documentary about tenants organizing against their landlord, proving that City Hall remains deeply committed to producing content.

Insiders believe Mamdani’s protectiveness partly reflects pressure to preserve the DSA movement’s growing political power.

“He’s the first DSA (mayor) so they have to show he can manage the city, and any time someone puts a dent in that it hurts their cause,” one government insider said.

Potentially negative coverage appears sufficient to stir City Hall into action.

When Queens Borough President Donovan Richards called the DSA “white supremacy” in an X post, sources said a Mamdani staffer asked Richards’ office to remove it, but Richards refused.

One Democratic operative mocked the mayor’s fixation on online approval, saying, “His security blanket is his phone and the dopamine from how many likes he gets on a post.”

That description fits an administration that apparently detects an unflattering post faster than it notices routine calls from political partners.

City Councilwoman Virginia Maloney also got Mamdani’s attention after rebutting his budget claims with, “I know math is hard.”

Sources said Mamdani reached out following her sarcastic post and also contacted officials who attacked his proposed property tax increase of nearly 10 percent.

Mamdani reportedly fumed after being denied an opportunity to eulogize Army Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad at her funeral in Queens.

One Democratic insider said the mayor adopts a “cold demeanor” toward those who cross him, a notable departure from his endlessly smiling public persona.

Several sources said ordinary outreach can languish until a press problem erupts.

“They only respond when it’s a crisis for them and reaches crisis levels in the press, but before that they don’t return calls, texts or emails,” one Democratic operative said.

Some insiders did credit the 34-year-old mayor with listening during private policy discussions.

A union source said, “He asks lots of questions. Seeks to understand the issues he’s lacking familiarity with.”

Senior spokeswoman Dora Pekec defended Mamdani’s approach, saying, “The mayor’s focus has and always will be how best to deliver for New Yorkers, and he sees our city and state elected officials as valuable partners in building a safer and more affordable city.”

Insiders, however, say his private conduct tells a considerably touchier story.

Former mayoral spokesman Fabien Levy argued that Mamdani should focus on governing rather than worrying about critical posts from council members.

For an administration seemingly glued to Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, the practical lesson is simple: New Yorkers care more about what happens in their streets than what flatters the mayor in his feed.
