Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is facing questions after his $300 million superyacht did not rush to assist passengers stranded aboard a boat in Alaskan waters, according to a report.

The incident involved his 387-foot vessel, Launchpad, and a much smaller skiff that ran out of fuel.

The 21-foot skiff lost fuel while traveling between Petersburg and Juneau, Alaska, on Monday night, the Alaska Beacon reported.

Although Launchpad was reportedly closer, the 387-foot vessel did not act on requests to assist the stranded passengers.

Help instead came from Wilderness Legacy, a small cruise ship operated by UnCruise Adventures.

The cruise vessel traveled toward the skiff and ultimately provided the assistance needed to bring it back to safety.

As the rescue unfolded, the captain of Wilderness Legacy made an announcement to passengers about the situation, according to a person aboard the cruise.

The captain said Zuckerberg’s superyacht had been closer to the stranded skiff but had “refused” to help.

That announcement quickly drew a strong reaction from passengers aboard Wilderness Legacy.

Vacationer Michael Love described what happened in a post on Bluesky after the captain told those aboard about the other vessel.

“There was near-unanimous booing when the captain announced this,” according to the Bluesky post by Love.

The skiff had sent out a call asking for assistance at around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, according to the Coast Guard. Officials reviewed the situation and determined that the vessel was not in distress.

About 30 minutes after the initial call, the Coast Guard issued a marine assistance request broadcast.

The request notified other vessels about the skiff and its need for help after running out of fuel in the Alaskan waters.

Vessel tracking services indicated that Wilderness Legacy was farther from the stranded skiff than Zuckerberg’s superyacht at that time, according to the Beacon.

The tracking information also showed the cruise ship moving toward the boat in need of assistance.

According to the outlet, Wilderness Legacy sailed past Launchpad while heading toward the stranded skiff.

Zuckerberg’s mega yacht, meanwhile, remained floating in the middle of the water as the cruise ship continued toward the passengers.

Wilderness Legacy eventually reached the 21-foot skiff and took it under tow. The cruise ship brought the stranded vessel back to safety in the protected waters of Farragut Bay.

A spokesperson for Zuckerberg responded to questions about the incident with a statement provided to the Beacon.

The spokesperson emphasized that Zuckerberg and his family were not aboard Launchpad when the skiff called for assistance.

“Mark and his family were not on board at the time of the incident,” the statement provided to the Beacon said.

The spokesperson also said the crew of Launchpad had been using a different radio channel.

According to the statement, the crew did not review the Coast Guard contact until assistance from Wilderness Legacy was already in progress.

“As the Coast Guard noted, the boat was not in distress, and by the time the crew reviewed the Coast Guard contact on a different radio channel from the one they were operating on, the assist was already underway. We’re grateful all parties are safe.”

The explanation offered a different account of why Launchpad did not respond before Wilderness Legacy arrived.

While the cruise captain reportedly said the superyacht had “refused” to help, Zuckerberg’s spokesperson said the crew did not see the Coast Guard contact in time.

The incident ended with the skiff safely towed into Farragut Bay and no reported distress finding from the Coast Guard.

Still, the captain’s announcement about the closer superyacht prompted near-unanimous booing aboard the cruise ship and left Zuckerberg facing questions over what happened.
