Governors, Congress Offer Support for National Shooting Sports Month

August is National Shooting Sports Month, and while we’re a fair way into the month already, it’s still important to remember. Shooting sports are a key part of our national heritage and identity, regardless of what anti-gunners may want people to believe.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation is doing important work to raise awareness of this heritage, and this month is an important part of that.

Luckily, we just got a little heavy-weight support for it.

That recognition is significant. These proclamations acknowledge that shooting sports produce and support jobs, sustain local businesses, strengthen America’s conservation system and preserve a tradition rooted in safe and responsible firearm ownership. That’s what August’s National Shooting Sport Month, and millions of Americans, are honoring all month long.

Governors Put It in Writing

It’s an impressive showing so far just one week into the month. Governors issuing official proclamations so far include Gov. Laura Kelly of Kansas, Gov. Larry Rhoden of South Dakota, Gov. Mike Kehoe of Missouri, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas, Gov. Mike Braun of Indiana, Gov. Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota and Gov. Bill Kemp of Georgia. Also making their support for the special month known are Colorado’s Gov. Jared Polis, Louisiana’s Gov. Jeff Landry, Mississippi’s Gov. Tate Reeves, Oklahoma’s Gov. Kevin Stitt, South Carolina’s Gov. Henry McMaster, Texas’s Gov. Greg Abbott and West Virginia’s Gov. Patrick Morissey. That is a lot of official support for a special month and an activity that millions of Americans participate in each year.

…

Leaders in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives are making sure the celebration is recognized in the halls of Congress, too. U.S. Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho) introduced S. Res. 826, “honoring the contributions of small manufacturers of firearms to the economy, culture, and recreational heritage of the United States and recognizing the month of August 2026 as ‘National Shooting Sports Month.’” The Senate resolution currently has eight cosponsors.

In the House, U.S. Rep. Tony Wied (R-Wis.) introduced H.Res. 1477, with the same companion language as the Senate version. “Wisconsin is home to many incredible small firearm manufacturers who help drive our economy and ensure access to safe, reliable firearms that allow us to exercise our Second Amendment rights,” Rep. Wied said in a press release. “This month, we recognize their contributions to our economy and reaffirm our commitment to protecting Americans’ constitutional right to keep and bear arms.”

The fact that Jared Polis joined the choir is…interesting. He did sign some pretty nasty gun control legislation into law, though it was after vetoing outright bans, so I guess he figures that’s pro-gun enough to back this. I don’t know.

Still, it’s important to acknowledge all of the lawmakers who have thrown their support behind National Shooting Sports Month, and we need to acknowledge it year after year.

While anti-gunners have done a lot to demonize gun ownership, we must work to counter that. Recognizing that shooting sports are a key part of our national heritage and that guns aren’t the enemy, and doing so publicly so the American people are aware of the role shooting sports play in that heritage.

It’s also worth reminding them that IPSC, IDPA, and three-gun are all shooting sports, too. That alone means that if you say you’re not going to take guns with “legitimate sporting purposes,” you can’t ban standard-capacity magazines or AR-15s. I’m just sayin’…

I’m glad to see this recognition, and I want to see it happen again next year, and the next, then the next, and on into infinity. I’m tired of seeing people treat the gun community like a plague rather than a community of people who happen to enjoy something that’s been enjoyed for more than 250 years on this continent.

The fact that Polis is the only Democrat who seems to have signed on, though, is going to be a troubling point for a very long time to come, though I wish I could say I was surprised by that.

Editor’s Note: President Trump and Republicans across the country are doing everything they can to protect our Second Amendment rights and right to self-defense.
