Why Offering Unsolicited Gun Advice Can Backfire Hilariously on You

Most avid shooters know who Jerry Miculek is. They also know who his daughter Lena is. She’s a fantastic shooter who, frankly, can kick the crap out of most of us on the range, and I don’t feel the least bit bad about it. I’m pretty sure the Miculeks are really terminators or something, anyway.

But Lena, like most people, doesn’t always want to wear tacticool clothing. That means, for her, dresses. It also means that for a lot of other women.

So, she decided to share some advice with the other ladies out there — though, admittedly, there’s a case to be made that her overall point applies to us dudes, too — and boy, did X get stupid about it.

OK, so when wearing a new holster, particularly with a dress or something else outside of the norm, practice your draws and firing the first shot with dry fire practice.

Seems sensible enough.

Luckily for Miculek, though, the internet is full of people who know everything.

Then we have someone who clearly doesn’t know what the hell they’re talking about when it comes to actually training with a firearm:

I absolutely love that one, because yeah, a professional shooter who concealed carries has clearly never thought about actually having to do it in real life and definitely never trained for that.

Then we have this classy “gentleman” here:

And this isn’t even close to all of them. I didn’t post those who suggested she modify her dress to make the draw easier, because those might well have been people just throwing out a well-meaning suggestion versus know-it-all Fudds who think they know better than the little lady here.

I’d love to chalk all of this up to sexism or something like that, but it’s not even that. I’ve seen this flavor of stupid on posts by guys. Maybe not the “cooter” comment, but the rest is pretty typical for the internet, particularly X. The difference is that those dudes weren’t renowned competitive shooters from a badass competition lineage. 

I’m not saying that the Miculeks are basically DevGru and Delta Force rolled into one. I’m just saying that I don’t want to go toe-to-toe with any of them on their worst day, even if it’s my best.

When you start throwing around unsolicited advice, particularly without knowing who the hell you’re talking to, you’re not coming across like an expert. You’re looking like an absolute moron.

Stop it.

What’s next? Are you going to flash your suppressor and say “just the tip” for us?
