I’m pretty bad at the revenge game.
Seriously, I am. Even though I firmly believe that justice requires an element of retribution, at least in cases where the malefactor is unrepentant, I have an unfortunate tendency to forget slights and harms even when I shouldn’t. I am the “fool me twice” guy who people rightly say, “shame on you.”
Still, some truly egregious harms I can neither forgive nor forget, and the truly evil acts of the COVID tyrants are among them.
Perhaps it is because the harms extend to people other than myself, or perhaps it is that they reveal something more than character flaws and reveal a deep cruelty and tendency toward tyranny that comes out of these people when given free rein.
Whatever it is, I cannot just get past certain things when the people who do them are truly unrepentant.

You’re not required to forgive anybody who refuses to admit to their wrongdoing, and you’d be an idiot to forget who they are.
Repentance is a form of self-imposed justice, and I can respect that, although in some cases repentance may not provide enough recompense to victims. If I were a parent of a child harmed by the COVID tyrants or the gender ghouls, I would refuse to simply forgive people who committed such egregious harms as they did.
Still, that’s not even an issue with the COVID tyrants. They were and remain very bad people who knew they were committing harm and seemed to revel in the power. Some, because they were performing a social experiment to see how absurdly they could make people behave; some because they believed that the harms they were committing were for a “greater good,” as communists claimed to; but many just reveled in the power, indifferent to the damage they were doing to the peasants they imagined us all to be.
People died alone because of these evil people, including children with fatal diseases being denied the comfort of having their parents by their side. Ditto for people in nursing homes. There are the vaccine-injured, and the children whose life prospects were permanently damaged by bureaucrats and politicians who cared not a whit about them.

Families were destroyed by differences over COVID measures, and that damage cannot be repaired. Friendships and families were destroyed for no good reason, and society became more divided than ever in my lifetime.

And, egregiously, social trust has collapsed. People no longer trust our institutions, and they shouldn’t. These tyrants shredded their integrity in their lust for power, and their lust for power required taking away one of our most human traits: autonomy.
We hear so much about defending democracy, but the COVID era was the biggest assault on democratic principles in our lifetime. Democratic values depend upon treating people as autonomous adults, and the whole point of the COVID panic was about destroying both autonomy and adult behavior.

“Do what we say, however absurd.” That was the mantra of the era.
What was done was evil. It was not good people trying their best, because good people do not bully people and abuse their power.
There may be a person here or there who has sincerely apologized, and I am willing to accept it. Some good people were swept up in the madness.
But they are the exception, not the norm. So spare me the excuses. I will not forgive and forget.
