The Democratic Party already has a crowded field of potential 2028 presidential hopefuls, although the word hopeful may be doing heroic work.

The emerging roster looks less like a political powerhouse and more like a reunion for failed policies, inflated egos, and national punchlines, as reported by Red State.

California Governor Gavin “Hairgel” Newsom remains eager to export his California record to the rest of America. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, forever burdened by the border crisis she supposedly never owned, also continues hovering around the conversation.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has likewise generated presidential chatter, fueled by her national profile and relentless appetite for attention.

Gold. Upgraded. Buy real gold from $1. Store it in America. Sell it with one click.

Now Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland appears ready to join this festival of failure.

Van Hollen told Meet the Press anchor Kristen Welker that he has been considering a 2028 campaign.

He cited visits to New Hampshire, mentioned an invitation to Iowa, and admitted he was “kicking the tires” while “testing the waters.”

Those are not casual destinations for politicians entertaining White House dreams.

New Hampshire and Iowa have long served as magnets for ambitious candidates hoping that voters will mistake frequent travel and rehearsed talking points for presidential stature.

Van Hollen, however, enters this discussion with an obvious problem.

Outside Washington political circles, he lacks the broad national profile, signature accomplishment, and compelling personality normally expected from someone plotting a path to the Oval Office.

His most memorable recent moment was his enthusiastic advocacy for “Maryland Man” Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

That spectacle produced photographs and political baggage that Republicans would gladly feature in advertisements from the first primary contest through Election Day.

Welker then handed Van Hollen another opportunity to show voters exactly where he stands.

She asked whether he would accept an endorsement from the Democratic Socialists of America, a question that should not be complicated for anyone seeking the presidency.

Instead of delivering a clear rejection, Van Hollen stumbled into an answer that exposed the ideological trap facing today’s Democratic Party.

Its leaders want socialist activists, socialist energy, and socialist votes, but they become remarkably shy when asked to admit the relationship publicly.

“I’m not going to reject an endorsement by certain individuals at the DSA,” Van Hollen said, while also insisting that he was not seeking the organization’s endorsement.

That is the familiar Washington game of trying to welcome political support without accepting responsibility for what the supporters believe.

The distinction is not convincing. If Van Hollen believes the Democratic Socialists of America deserves a place inside his party and would accept support from its members, voters are entitled to judge him by that company.

According to its platform, the organization seeks sweeping changes to America’s political and economic order.

A presidential candidate unwilling to draw a firm boundary against that agenda should expect serious questions about his judgment, principles, and willingness to defend the nation’s constitutional system.

The reaction on X was predictably brutal, with users mocking the senator’s presidential aspirations and questioning what constituency was supposedly demanding a Van Hollen campaign.

Even among Democrats, it is difficult to identify the excited movement waiting to propel him through a competitive national primary.

Van Hollen appears unlikely to crack one percent in a serious 2028 field. He combines minimal national appeal with the personality of a wet blanket, which is not exactly the formula for inspiring millions of primary voters.

His congressional record also offers little evidence of a defining achievement that would justify a presidential bid.

Voters are left wondering what Van Hollen has accomplished beyond becoming famous for defending the wrong cause and fumbling an easy question about socialists.

A Van Hollen nomination would be an extraordinary gift to Republicans, though Democrats are unlikely to become quite that generous.

If he enters the race, he could find himself competing with Representative Ro Khanna for the title of “worst primary performers.”

President Donald Trump is pressing forward with his “Golden Age” agenda while Democrats search for someone capable of leading their fractured coalition.

If Chris Van Hollen is the answer they produce, Republicans may want to send a thank-you card.
