Doja Cat Candidly Confesses to Past Struggles with Cocaine and Alcohol [WATCH]

Doja Cat opened up about deeply personal issues in a series of candid TikTok videos shared Monday.

The singer discussed her past experiences with cocaine and alcohol, along with mental illness, social media, and her struggle with self-hatred, as reported by Page Six.

The 30-year-old performer, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, said her experience with cocaine could have occurred around eight years ago. She made clear that the issue is now firmly in her past.

“But I’m well past that. Thank God,” Doja said as she reflected on that period. Her disclosure came as part of a broader discussion about the difficult combination of mental illness and online attention.

Doja said that “undiagnosed mental illness … paired with social media is an extreme issue that I think a lot of us don’t understand.”

She urged people to consider that combination when encountering negative material about themselves on the internet.

“I think that it’s important that we take that into account when we see things on the internet … about ourselves that are negative,” she explained.

The singer then continued the conversation in a second TikTok video focused on her past problems with alcohol.

According to Doja, the internet became a source of validation for negative thoughts that were connected to her drinking. She described how those elements interacted during her personal experience.

“The best example for my experience is using the internet as a means of validation to the negative thoughts in my head, which were then brought on by drinking alcohol,” she revealed.

Doja also distinguished her experience with alcohol from her history with other drugs. She said weed was an exception while acknowledging that alcohol had presented a definite problem for her.

“I’ve never had a real problem with drugs, except for weed, but alcohol is something that I definitely have had a problem with,” Doja added. At the same time, she clarified that she did not consider herself an alcoholic.

“I was never an alcoholic, but I definitely had problems. So if I can teach anybody anything, I will tell you that it’s not good to pair these two things together.”

In a third video, the biracial Grammy winner responded to allegations from fans who claimed she hated being a Black woman.

Doja said she believed that her feelings of self-hatred began when she was around 8 years old.

She connected that experience to moving into her predominantly white neighborhood at that age.

Doja ultimately said the TikTok discussion felt necessary because she needed to get those feelings off her chest and believed that day was the right time.

The revelations followed another personal disclosure from Doja in March, when she said she had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, also known as BPD.

At that time, she discussed learning from a young age to conceal her authentic reactions and emotions.

“I’ve learned from a very young age to pretend that I like stuff, to pretend that I’m happy, to pretend that I don’t like stuff that I do, to appear like everything is okay,” she said in the March TikTok video.

Doja said the pattern eventually caught up with her as she faced her diagnosis.

“I’ll get it done. And it caught up with me, and I think it always does for people. I’m now struggling with BPD,” the “Agora Hills” singer added.

Despite describing BPD as an “agonizing condition,” Doja also told fans that she has been in therapy “for years now.”
