Influencers have become nearly as much a part of the U.S. Open experience as the $23 Honey Deuce.

But their growing presence stirred fresh anger Monday when chair umpire Kader Nouni had to admonish a group in a suite during Naomi Osaka’s match against Anastasia Zakharova at Arthur Ashe Stadium, as reported by the New York Post.

A viral video from the incident showed one woman using a bright ring light to capture content while the match was underway.

@katticuspfinch Tennis etiquette is that you don’t even GET UP IN THE MIDDLE OF A POINT but now at @US Open apparently it’s ring lights and photo shoots everywhere in the MIDDLE OF A POINT. Listen, I love bringing new people to the open and I’m all for getting more people into tennis because it’s such a fun sport to watch but if you’re going to disrespect the players, you shouldn’t come to the match. And I LOVE content creators bringing tennis to everyone on social media but if you’re not going to be respectful of the game being played thats NOT OKAY. Yyou can see ring lights from all over the stadium and the umpire and players made it very clear that it’s a HUGE DISTRACTION and it’s now impacting the players ability to play the game we are all here to see. And apparently the us open and USTA are just fine with it because their staff is helping it happen. @influencersinthewild @Tennis Channel #nyccontentcreator #naomiosaka #usopen #tennistiktok #usopentennis ♬ original sound – There I Ruined It

In another post, a group of influencers inside a luxury suite could be seen recording a video as a fan sitting below them looked on with dismay.

The scenes quickly attracted attention as part of the wider discussion surrounding the annual tournament in Flushing Meadows.

Much of that debate has focused on the increasing attention placed on experiences beyond the competition involving the world’s best tennis players.

The USTA addressed the incidents in a statement provided to The Post. Spokesperson Brendan McIntyre described such interruptions as occurrences that happen “infrequently.”

“We want our fans and guests to have an incredible time when they attend the US Open, but we also need to ensure that does not interfere with the action and competition on the court,” McIntyre said.

“These instances happen infrequently, and similar to when crowd noise reaches a certain level, our chair umpires have the ability to address the crowd when they occur.”

The organization has also embraced the social media audience brought to the tournament by influencers and content creators. That outreach has included formally credentialing creators as members of the media.

In 2025, the USTA issued 54 media credentials to content creators, marking the first time the Grand Slam tournament had done so.

This year, the total reached “close to 100,” USTA director of media operations Jeanmarie Daly told Front Office Sports.

Some of the players competing at the tournament have appeared to welcome that growing presence.

American star Jessica Pegula said she can “appreciate” influencers visiting the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and “showcasing the U.S. Open experience.”

Pegula made those comments after defeating Sofia Kenin in the second round Wednesday. At the same time, the scenes from earlier in the week appeared to leave her questioning whether the attention had gone too far.

“I do think that it’s tough when you see videos like that when they’re taking pictures and using the selfie lights,” Pegula said. “People are down there trying to perform, and it’s their career and their job.”

“It seems like a bit disrespectful. I think it’s gotten a little maybe too much, it feels like, this year.”

“I don’t know,” Pegula continued. Her comments reflected the tension between appreciating the attention influencers bring and dealing with conduct that affects players during competition.

“I think, again, I can appreciate one side of it, but I think when you have the other side literally interrupting matches, it gets a little tough.”

The influx of influencers has also frustrated some tennis fans who believe too many attendees are more interested in the atmosphere than the competition.

Their complaints have added to the scrutiny surrounding behavior in the stands and suites.

“They don’t even care about tennis,” one person bemoaned to The Post last week.

“They are all just getting drunk and being rowdy.”

Caitlin Thompson, the founder of tennis literary magazine Racquet, also expressed concern about what now draws people to the tournament. She recently told The Post that she didn’t “think anyone’s really there to watch tennis [anymore].”

The viral footage placed that criticism directly in the spotlight, with a ring light and recorded suite video becoming symbols of the uneasy collision between tennis and influencer culture.

For players and annoyed fans, the attention became especially difficult to accept once it interfered with the action on the court.
