Too Dumb to Check: Clancy Defense Attorney Begs for Pardon From … Trump?

Today’s deep legal question: Does Kevin Reddington even know how the law works?

Fresh off attempting to sic a mob onto a holdout juror last week, Reddington appeared on Good Morning America to discuss what comes next for his client, triple-murderer Lindsay Clancy. What Reddington hopes comes next will either be a plea deal for an insanity commitment or a pardon. He’s clearly barking up the wrong tree here on the latter, and not just in the civics sense:

Lindsay Clancy’s attorney Kevin Reddington said he is hopeful for an agreement between the defense and the district attorney after Clancy’s trial ended last week in a hung jury.

Reddington also said he hopes President Donald Trump would consider a pardon for his client.

“Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady and the person she is, what she’s been through, and consider a pardon,” Reddington said Tuesday in an interview on “Good Morning America.”

Where did Reddington go to law school? Where did he go to high school, for that matter? Presidents can only issue pardons for federal crimes, not for state crimes. Clancy has been charged and will be tried again by the state of Massachusetts in state court, not by the Department of Justice in federal court. Trump has no jurisdiction over this case, which anyone who paid attention in high school civics class would already know. Reddington actually charges clients money for legal representation and apparently has no grasp on the concept of jurisdiction.

If Reddington wants a pardon, he’d have to apply for it with Governor Maura Healey, not with Trump. And while Healey won’t touch this case with a ten-foot pole either – she has better political instincts than to stop the prosecution of a woman who murdered her three children – Healey’s a lot more likely to have some sympathy for Clancy than Trump. It’s not clear why Reddington would think Trump prefers to see criminals go free, but Reddington may have paid as much attention to Trump as he did in civics class. 

Suffice it to say that there will be no pardon coming from the White House. Healey almost certainly won’t offer one either, so Reddington had better get used to the idea of a new trial, or stop attempting to get Clancy off nearly scot-free on a plea deal without serious prison time involved. 

Reddington’s not the only party to the crime looking for clarity. Patrick Clancy, the father of the three murdered children, has been the target of conspiracy theorists attempting to let his ex-wife off the hook for the murders. His attorney issued a warning this morning that Clancy will start legal action if the defamatory allegations continue:

Patrick Clancy, Lindsay Clancy’s ex-husband, issued a scathing statement to conspiracy theorists who have been claiming he was involved in the deaths of the couple’s children – “There will be consequences.”

“Enough is enough — this spread of blatant and baseless falsehoods must stop,” Clancy’s lawyer Howard Cooper said in a statement Tuesday morning. …

CBS News legal analyst Caroline Polisi said the statement is essentially a “cease and desist letter” and it may be an indicator that Patrick Clancy plans to formally litigate this issue on a civil level if it continues.

Reddington has another take on this. He’s encouraging the nutcases to continue disparaging the main living victim of the crime, a crime which Reddington’s own defense of Lindsay Clancy makes clear she perpetrated:

After the mistrial was declared Friday, Lindsay Clancy’s attorney Kevin Reddington was asked what he thought about Patrick Clancy conspiracy theories.

“You know, regarding the people on the internet, you know, I certainly don’t dismiss them. It’s amazing what people on TikTok and on Instagram, I do know those things, you know, it’s amazing how they’re able to ferret out facts and they do investigations,” Reddington told reporters.

After last week, we knew Reddington’s character. Consider this confirmation, along with confirmation about his competence. Hopefully, the state bar association will have something to say about this, and perhaps it might inform prosecutor Timothy Cruz in any plea deal negotiations taking place.
