Report: Jimmy Kimmel’s Late Night Show to End Next Year

The NY Post’s Page Six is reporting that Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show is going to end next year, putting an end to his 24-year run.

Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show is expected to come to an end in 2027, we hear, with sources telling Page Six that next season of ABC’s late night show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will be the last.

“His contract is not getting extended,” a source familiar with the situation explained.

The season begins on Tuesday and would wrap up with his final episode, after 24 years on the air, in May.

No one else seems to be getting confirmation of this scoop, at least not so far. But it has only been up for about an hour as I write this. Also, ABC is denying it. They told Page Six, “[this] information is inaccurate – any reports about the future of the show at this point are purely speculative.”

Nevertheless, sources tell Page Six that no one at ABC is worried about Kimmel’s fight with Trump last year. They suggested the decision could have more to do with the cost of the show. Kimmel has claimed his show is profitable so we’ll have to see what ABC says if this really happens.

Everyone remembers Kimmel’s big fight with the Trump administration last year after he suggested in a monologue that Tyler Robinson was MAGA. That was something which a lot of far left voices were circulating at the time.

Kimmel in September commented about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, specifically poking at Trump’s unsubstantiated claims the person who shot Kirk was the product of the violent “radical left.” Kimmel claimed “the MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” FCC Chairman Brendan Carr then criticized Kimmel in an appearance on right-wing commentator Benny Johnson’s podcast, suggesting the FCC could take action against the talk show because it wasn’t operating in the “public interest.” Shortly after that threat, Disney-owned ABC said Kimmel’s show would be put on a hiatus “indefinitely.”

I wrote about all of this at the time that it happened and it was very clear what Kimmel meant. As I pointed out here, even Vox and CNN’s Brian Stelter understood what people on the right were outraged about. Here’s some of what I said at the time.

I think it’s fair to say that a lot of people on the left at least understood what it was people on the right were reacting to. It wasn’t Kimmel’s flat joke about Trump’s stages of grief, it was the suggestion that the killer was right wing.

And for the record, as someone who followed this very closely, that was not a close call as of Monday afternoon when Kimmel recording his remarks. It was already clear from several sources that the shooter had expressed anti-Trump and anti-Kirk commentary. Also it was widely known that he was in a relationship with a trans person and by Sunday Axios was reporting that people close to the investigation believed his views on trans issues might be the key to his motive.

You can argue that it wasn’t as clear Monday as it would become after the charging document was published Tuesday, but if you were paying attention as of Sunday, all of the evidence seemed to be lining up in one direction.

And yet, polling shows that as of last weekend, a plurality of Democrats believed Kirk’s shooter was right-wing.

We never did find out where Kimmel got his information but there were a lot of possibilities. Keith Olbermann, David Shuster, Jemele Hill and Substack blogger Heather Cox Richardson were pushing the same idea in the days before his comments.

Kimmel talked his way out of it and Disney put him back on the air. But maybe they’ve had second thoughts again. If so we’ll only have about eight months to wait until he follows Stephen Colbert out the door.
