General Dynamics Is Delivering All 250 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams Tanks to Poland in About 24 Months. Warsaw Ordered Them for $4,750,000,000 Along With 17 Bridge Layers and 26 Recovery Vehicles.

The M1 Abrams Tank Is Now Close to Russia

General Dynamics Land Systems will finish delivery of the M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks ordered by Poland just two years ago, shipping all 250 Abrams off to Warsaw in just 24 months.

Now one of NATO’s biggest defense spenders, Poland ordered the tanks several years back, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The $4.75 billion agreement covered not just the 250 main battle tanks, but also 17 M1074/M1110 Joint Assault Bridges, 26 M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicles, training and logistics support, as well as ammunition.

The Key Differences

The M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 is the latest production variant of the United States main battle tank.

It is not so much a new, from-scratch design as a significant reconstruction of the M1A2, one that is better protected, leans more toward digital connectivity, and can leverage newer ammunition.

The SEPv3 retains the essence of the Abrams main battle tank and has a four-person crew, a 120mm main gun, extensive composite armor, and the same 1,500-horsepower gas turbine engine as its predecessor variants.

But the changes in this variant aim to keep the essential Abrams platform viable against newer weapons and threats.

To that end, the Next Generation Armor Package has improved protection with an enhanced underbody kit, along with measures that provide greater protection against improvised explosive devices.

The tank also has better electronic-warfare equipment against remotely controlled devices.

Its fire-control system incorporates an ammunition data link, allowing it to exchange information with programmable rounds, a category of ammunition that includes the M829A4 kinetic-energy penetrator and the XM1147 Advanced Multi-Purpose round, in essence combining aspects of several different kinds of ammunition previously used by the Abrams.

But the Abrams’ digital architecture has also benefited from extensive redesign.

A higher-capacity alternator, improved power distribution, battery monitoring, and redesigned replaceable modules provide more electrical power and simpler maintenance.

An auxiliary power unit can power the tank’s turret, sensors, and radios all while the tank’s engine is switched off, a great boon to fuel consumption.

By one account, the auxiliary unit allowed the Abrams to use 78 percent less fuel than would otherwise be consumed with the engine idling, with the secondary benefits of reducing noise as well as the tank’s thermal signature.

Key Criticisms

All these factors are certainly beneficial — but they are not without a cost.

And the price is weight.

The SEPv3 tips the scales at 66 to 67 tons, compared to the SEPv2’s 64 to 65 tons.

While seemingly small, weight growth limits transportability and adds logistical burdens for bridges, support equipment, and recovery vehicles.

That has been the primary driver of criticism of this Abrams variant—although it has incorporated several clear improvements over its predecessors, it has not shed the weight of those other variants and, in fact, weighs more.

While the SEPv3’s armor protection and electronics are certainly superior, movement and logistics are more difficult.

Another potential drawback of the Abrams design is its gas turbine engine, which consumes a considerable amount of fuel, particularly compared to modern diesel-powered main battle tanks.

While the auxiliary power unit reduces fuel consumption when stationary, it does not affect consumption when moving. And compared to other main battle tanks, the Abrams’ fuel needs are rather high.

But survivability is another question of survivability.

The SEPv3’s passive armor protection and electronic countermeasures do not guarantee protection from top-attack weapons.

As the experience of Ukraine has shown, the threat from above via drone is significant.

Some critics have therefore argued that the Abrams — and all main battle tanks — should integrate robust active protection, counter-drone sensors, and electronic warfare options rather than adding more armor.

Why Poland Purchased 250

Warsaw’s decision to buy into the Abrams program was driven virtually entirely by the threat posed by Russia and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Poland wanted to assemble an armored force capable of deterring, and if required, fighting and defeating a Russian armored thrust into NATO’s eastern flank.

The Abrams SEPv3 offered high-end protection, interoperability with American forces and the rest of the NATO alliance, and, crucially, an active production line capable of delivering to the Polish armed forces relatively quickly.

Though a substantial order, the 250 new-build SEPv3s complement Poland’s overall armor expansion since 2022.

They will eventually replace Warsaw’s Soviet-era T-72 tanks, as well as the older, domestically upgraded PT-91 Twardys.

Poland also acquired 116 M1A1FEP Abrams tanks, as well as South Korean K2S and German Leopard 2s.
