It pains me no end that I have to keep writing about how the UK has been quickly sliding into becoming a totalitarian regime.

Like many of you, I have been something of an anglophile, although hardly without reservations, even decades ago. But with heroes such as Winston Churchill and Maggie Thatcher as exemplars of political courage and wisdom, and the tradition of sharp debate that characterizes the arguments in Parliament (and in places such as the Oxford Union), it’s hard for a conservative not to be impressed by much of British political culture.

Few Americans can match the best British orators, and the British university system used to far outstrip American intellectual discourse, at least in the liberal arts.

Yeah, well, that was then; this is now. The UK has fallen, and I fear it can’t get up. Even a LifeAlert couldn’t help it now.

Yet another example of how far the Brits have fallen is the reaction of the British Security Services to the assassination of Charlie Cook.

A radical trans activist murdered Kirk, whose only crime was speaking to college students, and the “Research, Information and Communications Unit (RICU), a government counter-extremism and terrorism unit, began monitoring thousands of social media channels, gauging the reaction of what they describe as “Extreme Right Wing” (ERW) activists.”

Extreme right wing. Because opposing communism and trans activism while promoting free speech is too extreme for the UK.

Home Office unit clocks free speech as a risk and left-wing reaction as “moderate”. That tells you everything about who actually runs this country and what they fear. Speech isn’t extremism.

Now you may think that I am exaggerating the problem; after all, it’s conceivable that somebody could get radicalized by an event as extreme as an assassination. Leftists seem to get violent at the drop of a hat, and you no doubt recall that liberals danced in joy at Charlie’s murder.

For that matter, they are holding parties this year, including reenactments of his murder and joking (hopefully) about “Kirking” other conservatives, like Nick Shirley, whose only crime is exposing fraud.

Left-wingers love fraud.

But no, these same folks looked at the reaction of left wingers who were dancing with joy and called it “moderate,” and turned their focus on conservatives who were praying, placing flowers in memory of Charlie, and holding vigils.

They were especially worried that people would agitate for “free speech.” No joke. Free speech is radical in the UK.

Published here for the first time, a memo generated by RICU reveals that officials assessed that “Extreme Right-Wing” activists, including Tommy Robinson, would use Kirk’s assassination to “push pro-free speech narratives”.

Counter-extremism agents assessed that Right-wing extremists would use Kirk’s death to “encourage more radical action” and “abandon political moderation in favour of more radical political stances”.

Meanwhile, RICU characterised the Left-wing online response to Kirk’s assassination as “moderate” and largely “factual reporting”, despite thousands of Left-wing activists celebrating the shooting.

RICU’s response to Kirk’s murder has drawn criticism from prominent free speech campaigners, including the Free Speech Union, the Alliance Defending Freedom, and the US State Department.

A memo entitled ‘RICU Event Response: Charlie Kirk Assassination’ was circulated across Whitehall, including to officials in the Home Office, Foreign Office and Cabinet Office, as well as police officers, on 11 September 2025, the day after Kirk was shot.

The memo was classified as “Official Sensitive”.

Of course, conservatives don’t promote violence, and Erika Kirk herself announced that she forgave the assassin, which is much farther than I would go. Obviously she meant only in a spiritual way; it’s not like she didn’t want him prosecuted. But she took the word of Jesus to heart; I still lean toward Trump’s reaction.

RICU assessed that American and British ERW audiences would present the murder as “a shared attack on the ERW movement and free speech activism more generally”, and monitored the response of Turning Point UK, the British arm of Charlie Kirk’s American organisation.

“There is nothing ‘extreme’ about ‘pushing pro free speech narratives,’” said Sarah Rogers, the United States Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, who served as Kirk’s attorney on First Amendment issues and has led the Trump administration’s advocacy against censorship in Europe.

“That’s why censorship by governments proves so unpopular.”

Rogers added that in her judgment, the RICU report showed “blind spots” which “regrettably were not unique to the UK,” pointing out now-discredited intelligence products rescinded by the CIA “show the same biases.”

“Most glaringly, the memo describes the ‘leftist’ response as ‘moderate,’ despite describing the same leftists as ‘celebratory’ of Charlie’s murder,” said Rogers.

RICU is a government unit based in the Home Office that monitors and analyses terrorist and extremist content and supports government counter-terrorism communications.

This is the same attitude that has led to Britain coddling violent extremists, allowing rape gangs to ravage young English girls, and put white people in jail for objecting to the rape of Britain.

The irony is, the continued war on ordinary people perpetrated by their own government will radicalize people, as they see the establishment sacrifice them to the gods of woke. Every step they take in this direction gets the UK one step closer to civil unrest. More and more people see that the government treats them as enemies of the state, and the admission that allowing people to even speak out is unacceptable reinforces that.

Muslims in the UK can call for violence; Labour MPs signal that conservatives have their throats slit, and it’s A-OK. But if Lucy Connelly gets angry about it, off to jail for over a year. She got a sentence that was harsher than some Muslim rapists.

It’s appalling. And dangerous, because it is built on lies (the left was anything but moderate), and aimed at systematically suppressing anybody whom the ruling clique disagrees with.

Europe as a whole is going down this path, recreating a Stasi in the “free world.”

Screw these guys.
