Several performers have exited an international festival in Portugal where Jerry Seinfeld remains the main headliner.

Comedian and media analyst Tim Young argued that the withdrawals will hurt the departing acts far more than Seinfeld.

The inaugural MEO Commedia a La Carte Fest is scheduled to take place in Lisbon from Oct. 29 through Nov. 1.

Some performers cited concerns involving the Israel-Gaza conflict or political differences with people involved in the festival, while others gave no public explanation.

Actress Inês Aires Pereira announced Saturday on Instagram that she was withdrawing her show Namastê from the lineup.

Pereira explained her decision in an image posted to the social media platform.

According to a translation by The Hollywood Reporter, Pereira wrote that “one of the names persistently defends ideas and acts that I consider indefensible. We cannot minimize or normalize a genocide.”

Musical comedy duo Cebola Mol also announced an exit through Instagram.

In a translated caption, the duo wrote, “We will celebrate justice, freedom and joy with you on another occasion.”

That post included a cartoon watermelon, an image widely used as a symbol of Palestinian solidarity.

However, several of the other departing acts did not publicly disclose why they were leaving the festival.

Pop musical project Tributo Pop, comedian Pedro Tochas, the group Conjunto Cuca Monga, and visual artist Vhils all withdrew without publicly stating a reason.

Their departures came while the festival continued listing Seinfeld as a performer on its website.

Seinfeld has publicly supported Israel during the conflict, a position that has brought him both accolades and fierce criticism.

In June, a streamer approached him while he was leaving a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden and requested a “Free Palestine” shoutout.

Seinfeld responded that “it doesn’t exist.” He also discussed pro-Palestinian protests during an event at Duke University and accused people using the phrase of concealing hostility toward Jews.

Meanwhile, Young sharply dismissed the festival withdrawals and described Seinfeld as “uncancellable.”

Young, who serves as a Media Fellow at the Heritage Foundation and media editor at The Dallas Express, said performers should recognize the professional value of appearing with Seinfeld. He pointed to Seinfeld’s extraordinary success in comedy and writing.

“I think anybody who is a comedian, anybody who is a performer, would want to work with basically the most successful, if not one of the most successful comedians in world history at this point. The guy’s a billionaire from his comedy and his writing, and I don’t know why you would want to walk away from it,” Young said.

Young argued that the performers were putting politics ahead of a major career opportunity.

He characterized their decision as “a group of woke people performing for woke people.”

In Young’s view, the departing acts understand their existing supporters and are responding accordingly.

“They’re behaving the way that their audience would behave and just playing into it,” he said.

Young also suggested that withdrawing could bring the performers more publicity than appearing at the event would have generated.

Even so, he does not believe their decisions will cause any lasting damage to Seinfeld’s place in comedy.

“You can’t cancel somebody like him,” Young said.

“Comedy is uncancellable.”

Young argued that performers who reach Seinfeld’s level will not be meaningfully affected by such efforts.

He also said it remains important for established figures such as Seinfeld to speak publicly about conduct they consider wrong.

Ultimately, Young portrayed the exits as self-defeating choices made in service of a political position.

“Adults can’t be adults anymore. Everybody has to whine and cry. They will sacrifice their own success for a stupid stance.”
