A far left MS NOW news crew traveled to the southern border seeking a story about immigration and government plans for border barriers.

Instead, the crew produced an accidental comedy after becoming stranded in the remote Texas desert and requiring help from Border Patrol agents.

The network formerly known as MSNBC dispatched correspondent Antonia Hylton and her crew to the Big Bend region of Texas for the debut of “The Assignment.”

Their reporting trip took them to the Alvarado Ranch, where the group apparently discovered that desert terrain does not care about media credentials.

Shortly after leaving the ranch, the crew ran into trouble when its Jeep Wagoneer became stuck as daylight faded.

The same federal agents regularly criticized by left-wing media outlets suddenly became the people the stranded journalists desperately needed.

“As the sun went down, our Jeep Wagoneer bottomed out in the desert,” Hylton said.

That is one way to describe a vehicle becoming firmly acquainted with the unforgiving Texas landscape.

The crew could not simply call a studio producer, summon a makeup assistant, or wait for a convenient commercial break.

Darkness was arriving, the vehicle was not moving, and the remote location turned the reporting expedition into a genuine rescue situation.

Hylton acknowledged that Border Patrol responded with a substantial show of manpower and equipment.

“Eight Border Patrol agents in four different trucks came out that night to rescue our crew,” she said.

The rescue was apparently no simple roadside pull, either.

“Three of their four vehicles got trapped in the process.”

That detail makes the episode even more remarkable, since the effort to retrieve the journalists left most of the responding Border Patrol vehicles stuck as well.

The agents still carried out the mission, proving once again that their responsibilities extend far beyond the narrow caricature commonly presented by liberal media organizations.

The MS NOW crew had been covering opposition from some area landowners to federal efforts to acquire private property for border barriers through eminent domain.

That was presumably intended to be the serious political angle, complete with the usual focus on government power and local resistance.

Then reality barged into the production and delivered a much more memorable story.

The people documenting the border debate needed Border Patrol to venture into the desert after sunset and get them out of a predicament of their own making.

No scriptwriter could have designed the irony more perfectly.

A crew from one of the most reliably progressive corners of cable news went into border country and ended up relying on the very agency that routinely receives hostile treatment from media elites.

The agents did not have the luxury of sneering from a studio desk or reducing the situation to a political talking point.

They drove into difficult terrain, attempted the rescue, and dealt with multiple trapped vehicles while helping the stranded crew.

One can only hope the journalists offered a sincere thank you after the ordeal.

Border Patrol agents are frequently treated as props in ideological coverage, but when conditions became dangerous, they were the professionals called to solve the problem.

The episode also offers an unplanned lesson about the vast terrain faced by agents assigned to the southern border.

Remote stretches of Texas are not television sets, and navigation mistakes can quickly become serious once the sun disappears and assistance is miles away.

A social media user later offered a suggestion about the embarrassing rescue, adding another layer to the public mockery surrounding the incident.

It is difficult to blame viewers for laughing when the symbolism is this obvious and the facts already read like satire.

MS NOW set out to tell one story about the border, private land, and federal authority.

The network returned with another story entirely, one involving a stranded luxury SUV, eight Border Patrol agents, four rescue trucks, and a perfect reminder that truth remains stranger and funnier than fiction.
