WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Sara Larsen approached University of Utah College Republicans with a cake reading “Happy Kirkiversary” while they promoted a Charlie Kirk memorial.
  • Rylie Barnes posted the cake photo on X, after which the university accused her and another Republican student of threatening or endangering behavior.
  • An expulsion hearing was reportedly scheduled for 8:30 Pacific Time, while a protest against the Utah College Republicans was also being coordinated.
  • Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon reacted on X, asking Utah what was happening.

The University of Utah is threatening disciplinary consequences against two College Republicans after a photo exposed a student’s cake celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

The dispute has escalated into a reported expulsion hearing and attracted the attention of a senior civil rights official at the U.S. Department of Justice.

The episode began on September 10, when Sara Larsen approached College Republicans while carrying a cake that celebrated Kirk’s assassination.

Written across the cake was the message, “Happy Kirkiversary.”

Rylie Barnes, vice president of the University of Utah College Republicans, photographed the display and posted the image to her X account.

Barnes wrote, “What is wrong with students in Utah??”

At the time, the University of Utah College Republicans were promoting a memorial for Kirk that was being held at UVU.

Larsen’s decision to approach the group with the cake quickly sparked a national uproar.

Larsen later offered a reportedly phony apology for her actions.

The College Republicans nevertheless accepted it, an overtly generous response considering the nature of the display they had encountered.

That acceptance did not end the matter.

The University of Utah’s College Democrats went to the Dean of Students and demanded expulsions connected to the exposure of Larsen’s gesture.

Barnes and another Republican student subsequently announced that the University of Utah was siding with the Democrats in the disciplinary dispute.

They now face accusations from the university over their decision to show the photo online.

According to the university’s allegation, Barnes and her friend engaged in “threatening or endangering behavior.”

The behavior at issue was their publication of the image connected to the cake incident.

That accusation turns the focus away from the assassination celebration and places it on the Republican students who exposed it.

The school’s response has therefore transformed an offensive campus stunt into an expulsion controversy involving the students who documented what happened.

Reportedly, Larsen has supported the effort against the College Republicans behind the scenes.

A protest against the Utah College Republicans is also being coordinated as the disciplinary process moves forward.

The threats against Barnes and her friend have now drawn the attention of Harmeet Dhillon, the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice.

Dhillon reacted publicly to the situation through a post on X.

“Utah… wth is going on over there,” she wrote on X.

Her brief response put a national spotlight on a campus controversy that had already spread well beyond the university.
