WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • GM Defense delivered its first PAC-3 MSE housing components to Lockheed just 22 days after the companies signed their contract.
  • The partnership taps GM Defense plants, laboratories and manufacturing expertise to expand capacity and strengthen supply chain resilience.
  • Lockheed is investing $8 billion to $9 billion in munitions production across more than 20 U.S. locations.
  • Planned expansions will increase Lockheed’s production and warehousing space by nearly 50%.

Lockheed Martin said Thursday that it received its first shipment of critical components from General Motors for Patriot interceptors.

The delivery arrived less than a month after the companies signed a manufacturing agreement, as the Pentagon presses for faster weapons production.

GM Defense delivered the initial batch of housing components for the PAC-3 MSE interceptor on Aug. 28.

That shipment came just 22 days after Lockheed and GM signed their contract on Aug. 6.

The rapid delivery stands out because Lockheed said such components traditionally take months or years to produce.

Getting the first batch in 22 days marked a swift opening move under the new manufacturing arrangement.

“This extraordinary 22-day turnaround underscores Lockheed Martin’s relentless focus on execution — delivering for our troops faster, with greater capacity,” said Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

The Patriot missile defense system remains one of the world’s most sought after weapons amid the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran, as well as Russia’s prolonged war with Ukraine. That demand has placed renewed attention on the production of launchers, interceptors and their critical components.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Kyiv has credited Patriot batteries with helping defend Ukrainian cities from Russian ballistic missile attacks.

The system has consequently remained central to Ukraine’s demands for additional air defense equipment.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has repeatedly appealed for more Patriot launchers and interceptors.

Those appeals have continued as Moscow intensifies air strikes against Ukraine.

The agreement between Lockheed and GM Defense follows a broader collaboration announced by the companies in June.

At that time, they said they would work together to strengthen the U.S. defense industrial base while demand for munitions continues to surge.

Under that collaboration, Lockheed is tapping GM Defense manufacturing plants and laboratories to help increase production capacity.

The companies also said the partnership would support greater resilience across the supply chain.

GM Defense brings manufacturing capabilities from the automotive sector into the Patriot interceptor production effort.

Its initial contribution consists of the housing components delivered to Lockheed for PAC-3 MSE interceptors.

GM Defense President and CEO Stephen duMont said the automaker’s precision-fabrication expertise would support “production of this country’s critical defense capabilities.” His statement placed the shipment within the companies’ broader effort to increase manufacturing output.

The first delivery provides an early measure of how quickly the collaboration can begin producing critical components.

Lockheed emphasized the speed between the signing of the contract and GM Defense’s shipment of the initial batch.

Lockheed is separately investing between $8 billion and $9 billion to expand its munitions production.

That investment includes efforts involving PAC-3 MSE, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, known as THAAD, and the Precision Strike Missile, known as PrSM.

The company plans to add new buildings and jobs at more than 20 locations across the United States.

Those projects are part of Lockheed’s effort to scale output across several major weapons programs.

Lockheed said its production and warehousing footprint would increase by nearly 50% after the planned expansions.

The additional space is intended to support the company’s wider push to manufacture more munitions.

The PAC-3 MSE component shipment connects that larger investment campaign with the new GM Defense partnership.

Rather than waiting months or years for the first housing components, Lockheed received the opening batch only 22 days after the contract was signed.

The result gives Lockheed an early production success as the Pentagon seeks a quicker pace from weapons manufacturers.

With Patriot interceptors facing intense demand, the companies are moving to translate their June collaboration into delivered components and expanded capacity.
