Michigan Sheriff Threatens Benson Supervisors with Criminal Charges Over Alleged Election Probe Obstruction [WATCH]

Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf is escalating his investigation into allegations that Michigan’s voter registration system automatically adds people who are not citizens to the voter rolls.

He is now warning that officials who block his inquiry could face referral for possible criminal charges.

Leaf said his investigation began after he spoke with a confidential informant who works inside the Michigan Secretary of State’s office.

According to Leaf, the informant described how the state’s election software allegedly handles address changes involving people who are not citizens.

The sheriff said the Customer and Automotive Records System, known as CARS, is programmed to notify those individuals that they have been registered to vote.

Leaf’s account alleges that the registration occurs automatically when they update or move their addresses.

According to Leaf, the informant presented evidence of the process to a supervisor.

The supervisor allegedly responded that county clerks would identify the registrations and remove the affected individuals from the rolls.

Leaf disputes that response. He said local clerks receive access to the Qualified Voter File only after the Secretary of State’s office has already registered the person, while the file itself does not flag citizenship status.

Once an individual appears on the voter rolls, Leaf said, that person can request a mail in ballot or vote in person using an identification card.

He also said polling locations do not verify citizenship.

Leaf’s office referred the matter to the U.S. Department of Justice for investigation.

The referral concerns a possible conspiracy to violate 18 U.S.C. § 611, which the source described as unlawful voting by people who are not citizens.

The sheriff said the possible violation involved placing people who are not citizens on Michigan’s voter rolls and into the jury pool.

He also called on the Michigan Legislature to stop the alleged practice immediately.

Leaf asked anyone possessing additional evidence to contact his office or their local sheriff.

After his claims were questioned following the release of his first video on X, Leaf posted what he presented as evidence of his conversation with the whistleblower.

The dispute has since widened from the underlying voter registration allegations to whether state officials are interfering with Leaf’s investigation.

In a more recent video shared by Irving Township Deputy Clerk Shelly Lake, Leaf described his effort to interview two supervisors.

“I went to interview two critical witnesses. Both of them are supervisors for the Secretary of State’s office. The supervisors gave me what sounded like a scripted response that they were not permitted to speak with me or cooperate with my investigation.”

Leaf said the similar responses raised concerns that the supervisors had been instructed not to cooperate.

He then claimed he had received physical evidence identifying people higher in the Secretary of State’s office who issued that direction.

“Today I was provided with physical evidence that proves specific individuals up the chain of the Secretary of State’s office have instructed Secretary of State employees that they cannot speak to the Barry County Sheriff’s Office. I know who these individuals are.”

Leaf did not mince words about how he views the alleged instruction.

“This is obstruction of justice. Obstruction of justice, witness intimidation, and interference with an ongoing criminal investigation is a crime. Unfortunately, I may refer these individuals to the federal government for investigation and consideration for criminal charges.”

The sheriff suggested the supervisors themselves might have been following orders, but he insisted that would not excuse compliance with an illegal command.

He said those employees have a duty to disobey such an instruction.

Leaf also offered a potential path for employees willing to assist investigators.

“I will recommend immunity for these individuals if they cooperate with the investigation.”

The sheriff closed with the same message he has previously delivered during the controversy: “You know this is wrong. It’s time to act.”
