Note to Jake Paul: We Like the Energy, but Slow Down and Learn, First

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Those words are some of the most controversial in American history for some inane reason, but they are what they are, and you can’t make them be anything else. If we could, we would opt to end the whole mention of “well regulated militia,” and the Left would kill “shall not be infringed.” We all know it, too.

In this day and age, it’s rare for anyone famous to express any support for the concepts of the Second Amendment, much less someone like Jake Paul, but he kind of did.

He just needs to know what he’s talking about first.

I saw this from Mom-at-Arms, who had this to say:

He’s not wrong about the disparity. 

He’s wrong about why it exists.

The Second Amendment didn’t fail to keep up with technology. The Constitution didn’t suddenly become obsolete because weapons evolved. Paul is looking at what Americans are currently allowed to possess and treating that as though it defines what the Founders meant when they wrote the word “arms.”

It doesn’t.

The Second Amendment Says “Arms,” Not “Guns”

This is where Paul’s interpretation gets way too shallow for me. The Second Amendment doesn’t say firearms. It doesn’t say rifles, pistols, shotguns or whatever happens to be sitting behind the counter at your local gun store. It says “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

There are constitutional scholars and historians who have argued for a much broader understanding of “arms” than the handful of weapon categories Americans are accustomed to discussing today. Among Second Amendment advocates… I am one of them… you’ll often hear the idea shortened to something along the lines of “whatever the government has, the people can have.” 

Dead on.

The term “arms” never meant just firearms. It means all categories of weapons used in warfare. Privately owned artillery was a thing back in the day, despite what Joe Biden tried to tell the rest of the world.

To Jake Paul,

Jake, I won’t sit here and tell you I’m a fan, because I’m not. I’m not your demographic anyway, but I also remember you at a P.F. Chang’s during the George Floyd riots. Again, not a fan.

But that was six years ago, and I’m assuming you have matured at least a little bit. 

Because of that, I need to say that I love the energy regarding the Second Amendment, but you need to be informed on just what it means, what it covers, what it should cover, and so on.

I’d love to have you as a new champion of the Second Amendment. Your profile is such that you’d definitely be an asset, and your belief that private citizens should have all of these things tells me your head is in the right place. What you need to do is reach out to someone in the gun rights space. As someone with a firm hold on places like YouTube, talk to Brandon Herrera or another well-regarded guntuber.
