Marco Rubio Takes NBC News Host to School on Trump’s ‘Media Ban’ [WATCH]

Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared on NBC News’ “TODAY” and delivered a blunt defense of President Donald Trump’s new White House media policy.

The policy bars CNN, MSNOW, and Politico from maintaining workspace inside the White House.

Rubio challenged the notion that the administration was closing news organizations or using government power to silence reporters.

Instead, he explained that three outlets had simply lost the privilege of keeping desks inside the White House.

“We’re not closing CNN,” Rubio said of the ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico.

His response drew a sharp distinction between denying access to government workspace and preventing a media organization from operating.

“There aren’t a bunch of police officers or soldiers kicking down the doors of MSNBC or MS NOW, whatever it’s called, and arresting people and unplugging it from the grid. They’re just not allowed to work from the workspace at the White House.”

The administration’s decision applies specifically to CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.

Rubio emphasized that the outlets remain free to report on the White House, even though they are no longer entitled to embedded workspace inside the building.

That distinction was central to his defense of Trump’s policy.

Losing a desk at the White House is not the same thing as being shut down, despite the dramatic framing surrounding the administration’s move.

Rubio also questioned why the administration should be required to provide valuable White House workspace to outlets it views as hostile.

“What he is arguing is, why should I have these people, what right do they have to be embedded in this building?” Rubio said.

“They can cover the White House. They just can’t have a desk there.”

At the same time, he said they question or minimize information coming from the Trump administration.

The interview also covered the war with Iran and its effect on oil and gas prices.

Rubio argued that allowing Tehran to develop a nuclear weapon would give it a threat capable of constraining oil shipments and pushing prices even higher.

Rubio additionally discussed concerns surrounding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.

He addressed the need for a developmental framework that would preserve the technology’s benefits while reducing its risks.

Still, the White House media policy produced the interview’s sharpest exchange.

Rubio’s position was straightforward: CNN, MS NOW, and Politico can continue covering the administration, but they do not have an inherent right to office space within the White House.

The policy has found support among many Trump voters.

Some supporters believe the restrictions should have been imposed during Trump’s first administration rather than waiting until now.

The frustration is tied to years of coverage from CNN, MSNOW, and Politico concerning allegations of Russia collusion.

Their coverage was a political strategy designed to damage Trump’s presidency and create public doubt about him.

From that perspective, the ban is not an attack on a free press.

It is a decision to stop rewarding outlets that spent years attacking Trump with the convenience and prestige of working from inside the White House.

Rubio made clear that no reporters were being arrested, no studios were being unplugged, and no organization was being closed.

The administration is merely deciding who gets a desk in its building, and these three outlets did not make the cut.
