The source described Rakowitz as the murderer of Swiss dancer Monika Beerle.

He dismembered Beerle in a bathtub and turned her remains into soup that he fed to homeless people in Tompkins Square Park.

Despite those horrifying details, Hostin wanted Rakowitz found “not guilty.”

She introduced her role in the case while arguing that the insanity defense is firmly established and explaining her position in the Lindsay Clancy discussion.

“The insanity defense has been around in Massachusetts for 182 years, so I think it’s well established,” Hostin said.

She then declared, “And I thought absolutely she was not criminally responsible by reason of insanity.”

Hostin connected that opinion directly to her experience as a juror. Her explanation became more jarring as she identified the Rakowitz trial and her decision to stand apart from the other jurors.

“And the reason I felt that, I feel so strongly about this holdout juror is because I was a holdout juror in a case in the Daniel Rakowitz case,” Hostin said.
