Bill Gates is sounding an urgent alarm about the rapid development of artificial intelligence, warning that the technology could help trigger events that kill as many as one billion people.
The 70 year old Microsoft founder says government oversight is essential as AI becomes increasingly powerful.
Gates delivered his warning during a Sunday interview with Meet The Press moderator Kristen Welker.
He called for politicians and law enforcement to help determine what safeguards and monitoring the AI industry must follow.

“No one thinks self-regulation is enough,” Gates said. He added that government involvement should be required, even if the resulting oversight creates some additional work for companies developing the technology.
“You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like. And that has to be a required thing.
And it will be a little bit of overhead for the industry . But not a dramatic slowing of what they’re doing,” Gates said.
His most chilling assessment focused on the potential scale of destruction that could result when powerful AI systems are used by people with malicious intentions.

Gates said the technology could help produce a catastrophe involving an extraordinary number of deaths.

“AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that cause a billion deaths ,” he continued.
“So even though it’s pretty hard to get to 100% [of humanity], there’s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools.”
Welker responded by asking what could prevent tragedies caused specifically by AI.
Gates pointed to the growing difficulty of distinguishing between scientists seeking to develop lifesaving medicines and bad actors attempting to create biological weapons.
That overlap, according to Gates, makes oversight especially important.
The same powerful technology can be used by people pursuing sharply different goals, while their work may not be easy to distinguish during the development process.

“I wish it was easier to distinguish good intent, like I want to design a new drug for a disease , versus negative intent, which is I want to design a tool of bioterrorism,” he lamented.
Gates called on the United States to lead efforts to establish safeguards against the technology. He argued that increasingly sophisticated AI models should be monitored and that their activity should be recorded.
“Because those are so close, we do need to monitor any sophisticated model and record exactly what’s being done,” Gates insisted.
“You’ll hear from the industry , it’s a very doable thing. It would not slow them down dramatically.”
At the same time, Gates drew a distinction between requiring safeguards and opposing AI development altogether.
His argument centered on monitoring what advanced models are doing rather than treating oversight and slower development as the same debate.
“It’s these safeguards, their monitoring, are separate from would we be better off slowing down,” Gates argued.
In another clip included with the report, Gates described AI as “truly an evolutionary event.”
He said humanity has created an intelligent species that, over the next several years, will become “insanely smarter than we are.”
President Donald Trump offered a different assessment earlier this month when asked about concerns surrounding the pace of AI development.
When asked whether the AI industry should slow down its pace of development after several developers voiced concerns, President Trump said there are “a lot of negative forces” that are “bringing up things that won’t happen.”

He denied that advances in the technology would cause the extinction of the human race and called those fears “things that won’t happen.”
“We’re leading China in AI,” Trump said. “We’re the most sophisticated country in the world. And frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins.”
The competing remarks present sharply different views of the risks surrounding rapid AI development.
Gates is demanding required monitoring and government safeguards, while Trump is emphasizing continued American leadership and rejecting predictions that the technology will wipe out humanity.
