The bellwether elections in the German states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin Sunday before last are already having ramifications, and the victorious parties have yet to form governments to actually ‘do’ anything. In the case of one of the winning factions, all it’s taking is their rotten aura.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has only himself to blame for two consecutive regional election disasters, losing Saxony-Anhalt a few weeks ago and reacting…well…badly, with a screaming Teutonic version of the Democratic Party cri de coeur: ‘Who will wash our toilets, watch our kids, and mow our lawns?’

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, voters decided that Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) shouldn’t be a part of the local government at all anymore, since they were so out of tune with the voices of the people. The CDU didn’t manage to scrape up enough votes to meet the threshold for a seat and found itself locked out of the Landtag entirely.
It was shocking.
In Berlin, the CDU was dislodged from a ruling position it had held for only three years, in favor of the exact opposite result. Die Linke (the Left) and the literal reincarnation of East Germany’s old communist party, but with shiny new faces, won themselves a seat at the head of the table.
This was an ominous development across a number of issues, and not just for Merz’s rapidly fading political star power.
Die Linke is heavily supported by the large Muslim immigrant population in Berlin, the majority of whom voted for Die Linke.
…According to data collected by the Wahlen research group and obtained by the Catholic News Agency (KNA), Die Linke (The Left) won 51 per cent of Muslim voters in last Sunday’s Berlin elections, meaning that if only Muslims voted, the radical leftist party would have won an absolute governing majority in the Berlin state parliament.
While there is no official data, it has been estimated that Muslims make up around 10 per cent of the overall population of Berlin, making them a significant voting bloc.
Die Linke also performed well among non-religious voters, with 28 per cent of the atheist/agnostic vote backing the far-left socialist party.
Terrifyingly enough, the majority of women under the age of 25 voted either for the communists or the Greens.
…71% of women under 25 voted for the far-left, the left or the Greens.
51% of women under 25 voted for the party that is the direct, legal and organizational successor to communist party that ruled East Germany as a dictatorship between 1949 to 1989.
So you can see the city is up against a rock and a hard spot from the get-go. It shouldn’t surprise you to learn that Mayor Mamdani’s team was helping Die Linke during the campaign.
That would have been ‘election interference’ had any American politician been helping the Alternativ for Germany (AfD) candidates, who still came in a surprising third.
The Left has a tiny majority though and will have to pick up partners for a coalition. Obviously, they’re not going to work with the AfD (neither is the suicidally stubborn CDU, which could form a larger coalition and govern as a minority government if it did) (Dummkopfs).
The happy AWFLs who lead Die Linke, including its Turkish Muslim leader who may well soon be the next mayor of Berlin, have what should be a very familiar platform they are going to try to implement if one has paid any attention to Zohran Mamdani.
“Berlin has fallen,” is how one reaction from within Berlin’s police is quoted by WELT following the far-left Die Linke’s election victory, as officers express concern over the party’s plans for policing, domestic intelligence and the fight against clan crime.

…Die Linke wants to restrict certain police checks, shift some responsibilities from police to social services and replace Berlin’s domestic intelligence agency, the Verfassungsschutz, with an independent monitoring body. Its soft approach to so-called “clan crime” has also drawn criticism from police representatives.
They already have a problem with stabby and rapey people in the city, and this attack on policing should make it exponentially worse.
They’re also closely tied to the Palestinian/Gaza movement, with notorious Hamas supporters attending Die Linke’s victory party. This and the dialed-down policing bodes ever so ill for Berlin’s already beleaguered Jewish community.
The Leftists are also, as I noted earlier, gussied-up hardcore communists, who are big on expropriation.
If you have something they want, or they do not believe you should have it, or you have too much of it – whatever the excuse – they intend to take it.
Their specific plan is apartment buildings. Berlin has a horrible housing shortage, and apartment buildings are at a premium. Mostly because of the unfettered immigration and the extraordinary benefits those interlopers receive when they arrive, but that calculus does not compute with communists.
They see empty apartments or expensive ones not as the ‘greedy owners’ do, but as assets the state could utilize immediately to benefit their favored victim classes.
Die Linke’s narrow win on the expropriation threats that carried it to victory is enough to start destabilizing the Berlin housing market.
Threat of Berlin Property Grab Spooks Real Estate Stocks
A radical proposal to seize large housing portfolios is back on the agenda in Berlin, threatening deeper losses in real estate stocks.
Vonovia SE and Grand City Properties AG have plunged 20% this quarter, suffering the worst of a sector selloff triggered by rising interest rates. Analysts say they could spiral even lower if the anti-capitalist Left party, which won an election in the city this month, pushes ahead with its pledge to take properties into public ownership to deliver more affordable housing.
The party needs the support of others to govern and faces steep hurdles in executing its expropriation plan, but the prospect of prolonged political and legal wrangling is hanging over big landlords such as Vonovia, which owns more than 130,000 residential units in the city.
“German residential real estate is probably at the bottom of investors’ wish list,” said Pierre-Emmanuel Clouard, an analyst at Jefferies in Paris.
Interestingly, Berlin has always been a hotbed of taking other people’s property, but never has the reality that it might loomed so large before.
Cooler heads never followed through.
…The idea of seizing apartments isn’t new. Berliners voted in 2021 to nationalize portfolios of more than 3,000 units, but city authorities didn’t follow through. The pressure for change has been building since, driven by population growth in the capital, the most dramatic increase in rents on new leases anywhere in the country, and a drop in construction because of rising costs.
A proposal drafted by campaigners frustrated by the lack of action would transfer roughly 220,000 apartments into public ownership. If the Left party forms a government and pushes through expropriation on that scale, the impact would reach far beyond Germany.
Large investment companies that manage portfolios of apartment stocks are trying to sound brave about German constitutional protections against seizure.

…“Our confidence in the German rule of law and the protection of property remains as strong as ever,” Jakub Mika, head of finance at Heimstaden Germany, said in emailed remarks.
Vonovia said it expects Chancellor Friedrich Merz to prevent states from introducing expropriation laws, which the company believes are unconstitutional. Still, it stands ready to engage constructively with Berlin’s next government, CEO Luka Mucic added in remarks emailed to Bloomberg.

Germany’s hard-Left Die Linke party has threatened to expropriate Axel Springer, the owner of The Telegraph.
Martha Kleedörfer, a newly elected MP for Die Linke in the Berlin house of representatives, called for the German publisher to be brought into public ownership.
In a post on Instagram, she wrote “Expropriate Axel Springer”, repeating the slogan of a 1960s protest movement that sought to seize control of the company over its conservative political views.
Ms Kleedörfer also said “Rudi, we haven’t forgotten about you”, in an apparent reference to the protest movement’s leader, Rudi Dutschke, who was seriously injured when he was shot by Right-wing extremists in 1968.
The social media post suggests that Die Linke, which swept to victory in Berlin’s mayoral elections this month, may revive attempts to expropriate Axel Springer if it governs the city.
