Some Strange Updates on the RAF Fairford Story

Beege has been doing deep dives into this story since it happened. If you missed her story yesterday you should go back and check it out. When this story broke, it really sounded like this was going to be a story about a foiled terrorist attack on an RAF base. But after five suspects were arrested, all of them British nationals, the vans they were in were searched and no bombs or weapons were found. Homes were also searched and, once again, no “viable” bombs were found. Still not sure what that means, exactly.

So as Beege pointed out yesterday, there was some suspicion that maybe something else was going on here. Maybe this was a test run for a future terror attack? Maybe they were there to steal diesel fuel from farmers and/or from the base itself? All we know for certain is that the men were released on bail yesterday which makes it seem like the authorities didn’t really have a strong case that this was terrorism.

And then it got weirder.

Late yesterday the Times of London reported that police had received the equivalent of a 911 call about the three white vans nearly an hour before a local farmer coming home from a party found them blocking the road. That call apparently came from one of the suspects.

One of the five men phoned 999 in the early hours of Sunday morning before the group was arrested on suspicion of explosives and terrorist offences in the proximity of RAF Fairford.

The Times understands that the police investigation is focused on whether the group members were acting as proxies for Iran during the operation in the Gloucestershire countryside. Whether it was surveillance, a “dry run” to test security or a stunt to send a message to the British government are all under consideration.

The suspect’s motives in calling police are also under investigation: whether he got cold feet or whether it was part of the plan…

Fears of an imminent terrorist attack were downgraded when experts found fuel, not explosives, in the three vans the men were driving. Sources dismissed online speculation that they were fuel thieves.

None of this makes sense at this point. Did one guy freak out and turn them in or was this a test of response times? At the same time, police seem to be saying this was not just about fuel theft. And it’s worth noting that President Trump, who has presumably seen a lot more than most reporters, also seemed to think this was a serious incident and not a minor crime.

Today, we got more confirmation that, for reasons that haven’t been made clear yet, this incident may have connections to Iran.

The government believes that Iran played a part in the RAF Fairford incident which resulted in five men being arrested and then bailed, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said.

“We will say more in due course but we can confirm… that we believe Iran to have played a part,” he told the BBC. He did not provide further details. Tehran has strongly denied any involvement.

What Burnham said today seems to jibe with what Sec. of State Rubio said Monday about this incident, i.e. that it involved a state actor. He even mentioned Iran though without directly connecting them to the incident.

So it’s looking for the moment like this was some kind of test set up to see how (or if) authorities would respond. That would explain the connection to Iran and everyone who knows something saying this was a very serious incident. It’s a bit harder to explain the call from one the suspects. 

Hopefully we’ll get a look at whatever information Rubio, Trump and Burnham are all relying on soon.
