WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Wynonna Judd rejected Rosie O’Donnell’s claim that she supports President Donald Trump, calling it “100%” an assumption.
  • Judd said she is independent and has never discussed politics with O’Donnell during their decades of friendship.
  • O’Donnell apologized if she was wrong and said Judd’s 2023 Mar-a-Lago performance prompted her assumption.
  • Judd is now focused on The Hard Truth, a personal album featuring nine songs written with husband Cactus Moser.

Wynonna Judd says she was “in shock” after longtime friend Rosie O’Donnell publicly described her as a supporter of President Donald Trump. The country music star insists O’Donnell never discussed politics with her and simply made an assumption.

In August, O’Donnell, 64, claimed that Judd, 62, was the only Trump supporter with whom she still maintained a personal relationship. Judd has now rejected that description, telling People Magazine that O’Donnell’s claim was “100%” an assumption about her beliefs.

“I’m in shock, just so you know,” Judd told People Magazine. “I’ve never spoken to her about politics in my life. She doesn’t know anything about my stuff. I’m an independent.”

Judd explained that she makes a point of not discussing politics. Although she said she was “not angry” about what happened, the singer was clearly confused about how O’Donnell reached such a definitive conclusion without ever speaking to her about the subject.

“I don’t know where it came [from]. It’s complete assumption,” Judd said. Her response directly challenged the political label O’Donnell had publicly placed on her.

Judd also made clear that she has little appetite for a public fight over the matter. Instead, she expressed frustration that the situation had created more drama amid everything already happening in the world.

“I heard it and I went, ‘What the…?’ I don’t ever remember talking to her about this, so she’s just assuming.’ I just don’t want drama . So if there’s going to be drama [about it], I’m like, ‘Oh for [expletive] sake, there’s so much going on right now in the world. Can we just love each other?’”

O’Donnell made her original comments during an August appearance on The Tangle podcast. She said Judd was the only Trump supporter she still kept in her life, despite their sharply different presumed political views.

“I am friends with Wynonna Judd, who I love very much, and I’ve known her for many, many years. And she is a supporter of Trump. And somehow we never bring it up,” O’Donnell said.

O’Donnell continued by connecting her willingness to overlook that presumed support with the personal hardship Judd has endured. She referenced Judd’s upbringing and the death of her mother while explaining why their friendship had continued.

“I kind of give her a grace in a way. She’s had so much in her life, with her mom taking her own life, and just the complicated nature of her upbringing. And I really love her and I care about her and for some reason I’m able to put that aside when we interact.”

After Judd publicly corrected the claim, O’Donnell issued another statement and explained why she had made the assumption. Her response pointed to Judd’s 2023 performance at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida residence.

“I just thought as she has performed at Mar-a-Lago that she was [a Trump supporter],” O’Donnell said. “I apologize if I was wrong.”

Judd and O’Donnell have been friends for decades. Judd also appeared on O’Donnell’s talk show many times during the 1990s, making the public political claim particularly surprising given Judd’s insistence that the two had never discussed her beliefs.

O’Donnell moved to Ireland last year following Trump’s second presidential victory. Her comments about Judd came as she discussed the people she continued to keep in her life despite their presumed support for Trump.

Judd, meanwhile, is concentrating on her deeply personal album, The Hard Truth. She co-wrote nine of its 10 tracks with her husband, Cactus Moser, while continuing to come to terms with the 2022 suicide of her mother, country music star Naomi Judd.

“Raw and real is what this album is,” Judd said. “I feel like this is the most honest and vulnerable I’ve ever been.”

“It’s there for everyone to hear. So there are some days I think, ‘Oh my God , what have I done?’ And then other days I think, ‘There comes a point in your life when you are ready to tell your testimony ,’” she concluded.

For Judd, the controversy returned to one simple point. She does not discuss her politics, and O’Donnell had no direct conversation with her that supported the label she used publicly.

“I don’t discuss it, and I don’t know where it came [from]. It’s complete assumption.”
