I’ve spent way too much time this week taking issue with the Trump administration, including the president himself, for their comments about guns and what people can and can’t do with them.
The right to keep and bear arms matters, and it doesn’t evaporate simply because someone is taking part in something you don’t approve of. All other laws apply, and they should, but to say people can’t do a thing they most definitely can is problematic.
But as annoying as that is, it’s the other side of the coin I find even more stupid.
The Second Amendment debate shouldn’t be partisan, but it often is. The American left has been anti-gun, for the most part, for decades. They’ve supported every gun control law on the books, and they keep wanting more, including a ban on carrying a gun to protests and the like.
And a lot of us are sick of where they’re standing now.
But let’s not pretend that it’s the Republican officials and solely Republican officials being hypocritical about this. I’ve actually mostly seen criticism of Kash Patel et al from Republicans. So my question is, where do Democrats actually stand on this?
As I mentioned earlier this week, the ACLU, for instance, has backpedaled on whether they support concealed carry rights of protesters. I think many progressives do NOT believe that protesters should be armed. They certainly seem to support every restriction on gun ownership and concealed carry that Democratic legislators can think of.
Sadly, too many politicians in both parties have been willing to compromise on fundamental Second Amendment rights. I’m perfectly willing to admit that many Republicans have been bad on this issue. But most Democrats are significantly worse, and favor all sorts of restrictions on gun ownership, on carrying guns, on which guns you can buy, on how long it takes. Every time anything goes wrong concerning a gun, we are told by Democrats that we need common sense gun control, whatever that is. Are they now saying, in the wake of Pretti’s death, that they no longer support that?
A prime example of this is former New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin.
He’s defended every gun control law the Garden State has. He’s made it clear that he wants more. Yet now, he’s suddenly acting like a 2A absolutist, all because someone on Team Blue got shot while carrying in a political context.
Anti-gunners throughout the land have suddenly talked about the Second Amendment like they’re Gun Owners of America, and all while knowing good and well they want to ban precisely what Pretti was doing when he was killed.
They’ve long claimed the presence of firearms at a protest is an intentional act of intimidation. It’s a threat to the safety of anyone who disagrees with whatever is being protested, but that’s nowhere to be heard in the rhetoric, such as what we saw from Giffords on Wednesday.
Gavin Newsom made a comment about how Trump didn’t support the Second Amendment, all while trying to push his own constitutional amendment that would essentially repeal it.
It’s weird because this is a golden opportunity for the anti-gunners. Suddenly, they have the Trump administration sounding like them, but they’re so deep in the Team Blue Kool-Aid that they can’t help themselves but oppose whatever Trump says.
That’s the only good news in this whole fiasco. It’s so partisan right now that no one can agree enough to try to pass gun control, amazingly enough.
I’d be willing to welcome people like Newsom and others to the Second Amendment rights camp if they actually believed anything they said, but they don’t. They only see it as a problem because one of their footsoldiers got killed, and the administration said something they can try to pounce on.
Over this week, I’ve commented that I hate everyone, and this is why.
There’s no principle on either side. There never has been, but it’s particularly true in the anti-gun camp, because there’s a difference between misunderstanding the law and outright screaming the opposite of what you’ve been screaming for decades.
