For a lot of women, there’s a real fear of being kidnapped. It’s not just being ripped away from their family and friends, but also about whatever horrors might visit them while in captivity. I get that, but I also watch a lot of shows like Criminal Minds, so…

Still, all too many people who get kidnapped are either never seen again or are found dead. The fear is very real.

In Florida, a woman found herself facing that very real terror. Luckily for her, she’s married to a man who owns a firearm.

A Bradenton man fended off a kidnapper who tried to abduct his wife on New Year’s Day, deputies said.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Nicholas Palomo, a 36-year-old felon who had previously gone to prison for kidnapping and other crimes, attempted to abduct a woman who was walking her dog in the area of 18th Place East in Bradenton.

The woman managed to escape Palomo by running from his car and made it to her home and warned her husband about what happened.

Detectives said the husband went outside and confronted Palomo who behaved “in a threatening manner” toward the couple. When Palomo began approaching the victim’s husband, the husband shot him a single time in the driveway.

The sheriff’s office said the whole ordeal occurred within a matter of minutes.

Happily, the once and would-be kidnapper did not survive the encounter.

It does seem that Palomo may have been under the influence of some substance, which may explain part of his “threatening” behavior, but then again, he tried to kidnap a woman, then followed her home. That’s threatening enough all on its own.

The state attorney general’s office has already ruled this one as self-defense, which makes perfect sense.

Now, because this convicted felon, who was clearly not walking the straight and narrow, is no longer part of the world of the living, the world is safer for everyone, especially women.

Out there, though, someone is probably trying to make some kind of argument about why Palomo shouldn’t have been shot, acting like the man in question has some warped value system because he didn’t hold a kidnapper’s life in higher esteem.

Personally, once you try to take someone against their will simply because you want them, you have forfeited your right to be considered human for all practical purposes. You might be a human in a biological sense, but there’s no humanity within you. Getting lit up by a husband protecting his wife, as he likely vowed to do on his wedding day, is the only rational response a private citizen can have so long as they’re armed.

Hiding from him until the police arrive isn’t the sure-fire thing some people want you to believe.

Arranging for him to be judged by the Almighty? Well, that’s an entirely different thing.

I’m sorry this family had to endure this kind of nightmare. I’m sorry the armed citizen now has to deal with the fact that he took a human life, which isn’t particularly easy for most decent people.

I’m not sorry this piece of pond scum has been removed from the realm of the living, though.

Not sorry in the least.
