Attacks on Synagogue, University Are Why We Need to Carry

Americans got two terrifying reminders today of the importance of armed citizens and our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms; not only for our own individual defense, but for the defense of others and our communities. 

An attacker at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia was able to kill one ROTC cadet and critically injure another before he was stabbed to death by another cadet in the classroom where the ROTC course was taking place. Just hours later, a man in a truck plowed through the front doors of a synagogue in Michigan, but was shot and killed by on-site security before he could attack anyone inside.

On Fox News, anchor John Roberts and retired FBI agent Rob Chadwick praised the “good guy with a gun” who was able able to thwart the synagogue attack. Roberts said it was a “shame that it has come to that, but that’s where we are in America today.”

“John, you’re so right. And it’s, you know, it’s one of the blessings of being an American. This is what the Second Amendment is all about. It gives us the right to that one tool, John, that separates us from catastrophe in the hands of a properly trained individual,” agreed Chadwick. “And we, you know, when I learned about the event in Wayne, Michigan, I was so gratified having done 30 years in law enforcement, most of that in training, now working with civilians, this is it’s about. It’s being able to protect yourself until law enforcement can get there. We know our law enforcement, you know, first responders are stretched thin, they’re doing everything they can. Each of us has to understand that we need to become stakeholders in our own safety and security the USCCA [U.S. Concealed Carry Association] has a website for religious institutions, uscca.com/worship, for these types of classes that are free. And I’ll tell you, John, the most amazing thing about that past incident this summer: that team had just been to a training three nights before the attack happened.”

As of this writing there’s been no official word on the motive for either of these attacks, but there’s plenty of speculation that both of them were in response to the U.S.-Israeli attacks on the Iranian regime. If that does prove to be the case, there are likely to be more such attacks in the future, and it behooves all of us to exercise our right to bear arms at every given opportunity.

Markowicz posted this on X before news of the first shooting at Old Dominion University had been widely reported, but her comments hit even harder now that we’ve seen the footage from Norfolk and West Bloomfield, Michigan. 

Those intent on mass murder are happy to see signs warning that no guns are allowed on the premises. That gives them a target rich environment, and most likely means that an armed response won’t arrive for several minutes after they start to carry out their attack. 

If you’re a regular reader here at Bearing Arms, odds are you’re already lawfully carrying, at least on some occasions. If you’re new here, or if you’ve been keeping but not bearing arms in self-defense, I encourage you to follow Chadwick’s advice and become a stakeholder in your own personal safety. Get some training, even if you live in a state where it’s not required to legally carry a gun. Regularly visit the range, and practice at home with dry-fire exercises. And carry wherever and whenever you can, because while violent crime is at record lows today’s events prove that there are still plenty of threats out there.
