Bondi Out at DOJ, So What Happens Now to Civil Rights Division’s 2A Focus?

According to a Fox News report, Pam Bondi received The Apprentice treatment from President Donald Trump on Wednesday night and was fired as Attorney General. Fox, citing two unnamed sources, says Bondi met with Trump in the Oval Office ahead of his address to the nation, and was “on her way back to Florida” by the time the President went live.

The White House, responding to a Fox News request for comment, pointed Wo the same comment the WH comms office provided to the New York Times when it asked about Bondi’s job status earlier in the week: “Attorney General Pam Bondi is a wonderful person and she is doing a good job.”

That message was undercut a short time later by President Trump himself, who confirmed that Bondi is AG no more.

Blanche has been very active in the DOJ’s pro-2A efforts, and showed up at this year’s SHOT Show in Las Vegas, where he promised the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division would be taking on additional cases challenging state and local gun control laws this year. Blanche also said that the DOJ’s rights restoration process would be in place starting on March 1, though, which does not appear to be the case.

Ahead of Trump’s post on Truth Social, 2A attorney Kostas Moros expressed his concern that Bondi’s replacement would not be as supportive of the Civil Rights Division’s work.

If true, this makes me nervous. I know many on 2A twitter don’t like her (for reasons I think are sometimes unreasonable), but it remains true that she has empowered the civil rights division massively to pursue the Second Amendment as a priority.

If the Attorney General is… https://t.co/zcrOs3RtX6

EPA head Lee Zeldin is reportedly Trump’s top choice to succeed Bondi as Attorney General, and if he does become the pick I think he’ll be an even stronger supporter of DOJ going after gun control laws than Bondi was.

While in Congress, Zeldin co-sponsored national right to carry reciprocity bills, opposed the VA’s move to strip veterans of their 2A rights if they had a fiduciary appointed to help manage their affairs, voted to end the Obama administration’s attempt to weaponize the banking industry against gun makers and sellers, and was consistently rated “A” by the NRA. When Zeldin ran for governor of New York, he made opposition of the SAFE Act a key component of his campaign, though he did engage in a bit of political doublespeak when his comment that “we should not have red flag laws that could be targeting law abiding gun owners,” emerged as a talking point of his opponents after the mass shooting at a Buffalo grocery store.

Zeldin “clarified” that comment through his campaign, which said “Congressman Zeldin does not support red flag laws that target law abiding citizens. The Buffalo shooter, considering his terrorist threats, was not a law abiding citizen. He should have never had access to any weapon.”

The killer made those comments shortly before carrying out his racially-motivated attack, so it’s highly unlikely that a “red flag” law would have prevented him from owning a gun or that police would have had enough time to investigate and charge him for the threats alone if they’d been reported in a timely manner.

That statement appears to be the biggest blot on Zeldin’s 2A record, and unless something else pops up I think Kostas shouldn’t lose any sleep over Zeldin’s nomination… if, in fact, he does get the nod from Trump. The Civil Rights Division should be fine. The real question is whether the next Attorney General will continue to defend the vast majority of federal gun laws, or if they’ll take the DOJ in a new direction. I don’t know that Zeldin will be much better than Bondi in that regard, but I highly doubt he’s going to be worse.
