Minnesota State Rep. Sandra Feist got an unexpected civics lesson this week after she tried to debate Border Patrol “commander-at-large” Gregory Bovino this week at the Minnesota state capitol.

Bovino had apparently just wrapped up an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham when Feist decided to get a little feisty with the Border Patrol official.

During a back and forth with Bovino, Feist told an unidentified person filming the exchange that she is a former board member of the ACLU of Minnesota and she “believes in the First Amendment.”

Bovino responded by asking her a simple question: what about the Second Amendment?

Feist shrugged her shoulders and mumbled something unintelligible, but Bovino pressed her again.

Feist: “I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but we had a shooting in a school here in Minnesota recently -“

Bovino: “What does that have to do with the Second Amendment?”

Feist: “Well, I think that if we had some common sense gun violence prevention laws -“

Bovino: “Who gets to say it’s common sense? You?”

Feist: “Well, yes! I’m a legislator.”

Bovino: “Exactly, and I think that’s definitely the problem.”

Feist: “Is it? Because I think the problem is that children are dying.”

Bovino: “When you use that violent rhetoric around school children, I’d say you’re probably not exercising a lot of common sense, representative.”

Feist: “I’m here as a volunteer for Minnesota Youth in Government, and the point of Minnesota Youth in Government is to encourage children to participate in our civic institutions, to learn about them, to learn how to exercise their constitutional rights.”

Bovino: “I do the same thing! I take children to shooting ranges, and I teach them to shoot, to exercise their Second Amendment rights; rights that it seems like you want to take away.”

Feist: “I don’t have strong opinions about the Second Amendment, I just care about childrens’ wellbeing.”

Bovino: “Just the ones you want, right? Just the ones you think you need and care about. But not the Second Amendment. That’s always the litmus test for you folks.”

Feist: “I just want people to live in peace.”

Bovino: “Me too. The Second Amendment does that.”

Feist: “Really? Well all I see here in Minnesota are people dying. Children.”

Bovino: “What about the lives that are saved by guns? You don’t talk about that, do you?”

At that point the camera operator interrupted to ask Feist about fentanyl deaths, noting that the drug is illegal but people are still dying anyway. Feist threw up her hands and walked away.

The most telling part of the exchange between the law enforcement officer and the lawmaker was when Feist said she doesn’t have strong opinions about the Second Amendment, which was clearly a lie given that she declared moments later that she sees people dying as a result of our right to keep and bear arms.

I’m a civil libertarian. I love all of our enumerated rights, from our freedom to speak to our right to remain silent. I have no issue whatsoever with people peacefully protesting the actions of ICE or the Border Patrol. I don’t even have an issue with them engaging in civil disobedience, though anyone who believes that civil disobedience can or should be consequence-free is deluding themselves.

Feist, though, wants to pick and choose which rights are worth protecting like they’re items at a buffet. And those rights that aren’t worth protecting, in her view, shouldn’t be treated with benign neglect. No, those rights should be turned into wrongs and constitutionally protected activity should be criminalized. She takes issue with Border Patrol agents enforcing immigration law, but if Bovino and his colleagues were going around confiscating AR-15s from their lawful owners, I’m sure she’d be cheering on their “common sense gun violence prevention” efforts.
