The sheer amount of bad takes and reprehensible reactions to the assassination of Charlie Kirk is overwhelming, and Brady head Kris Brown is among the worst offenders.
While Brown professed on Bluesky earlier today that her “heart is with Charlie Kirk’s family”, her head and fingers are busy spewing anti-gun talking points like this.
Utah is a “constitutional carry” state, meaning it allows the open and concealed carrying of firearms without a permit. In May, a change in state gun laws made it legal to carry loaded, hidden firearms on college campuses. The state also bans colleges from disallowing concealed carry.

The FBI has already recovered the weapon that was used to murder Kirk, and it wasn’t a handgun or a scary black rifle. It was a hunting rifle; one supposedly found with several rounds of ammunition that had “expressions of transgender and antifascist ideology” etched on them, according to multiple outlets including the Wall St. Journal (though those reports have yet to be officially confirmed).
Utah’s status as a Constitutional Carry state and the fact that public college and university campuses aren’t “gun-free zones” has no bearing on Kirk’s assassination, but that’s not stopping Brown from blaming Kirk’s murder on Utah’s pro-Second Amendment laws.
Sadly, Kirk’s death isn’t the only tragedy that Brown has exploited in the past 24 hours. On Wednesday evening she posted this on her Bluesky account.
Evergreen tonight. Annunciation 14 days ago. Grateful for @governorwalz.mn.gov’s call for a special session. Now we need bold, meaningful action. #MN

Brown was referring to a shooting at Evergreen High School in Jefferson County, Colorado on Wednesday afternoon, where a 16-year-old student shot two classmates before taking his own life. According to police, the shooter used a revolver in the attack, not a “ghost gun” or “battlefield weapon of war.”
This also happened in a state that has “red flag” laws, “universal” background checks, storage mandates, bans on “large capacity” magazines, bars adults under the age of 21 from purchasing firearms, and a three-day waiting period on adults who can purchase guns (among other restrictions). What, specifically, is the “bold, meaningful action” Brown thinks lawmakers in Denver should take in response to this shooting?
Brown also went after South Carolina congresswoman Nancy Mace, accusing her of making a “dangerous signal of vigilante violence.”
This is a dangerous signal for vigilante violence. Our elected officials should be condemning all acts of violence, not promoting more.

Admittedly, this one’s a little more iffy. Mace talked about bringing back the death penalty and called for “swift justice”, which doesn’t sound like she was encouraging vigilantism. The congresswoman should be aware, though, that the death penalty can be imposed at both the federal level and in the state of Utah, where a firing squad is one of the approved methods of execution (though the executioners aim for the heart, not the head).
Even if we assume that Mace was making an intentionally provocative statement to draw attention to herself (which would hardly be the first time a politician has done something like that), Brown is hardly the one who should be pointing fingers given her own exploitative statements on social media.
If Brown believes that hunting rifles and revolvers should be banned, she should come right out and say so. Using these tragedies as an excuse to reiterate her worn-out talking points and vague and vacuous calls to action? That’s just pathetic.
Do better, Kris.
Editor’s Note: The gun control lobby has no qualms about exploiting the deaths of innocents to advance their disarmament agenda. In fact, it’s straight from their playbook.
